Hi guys, new to modern diesels and need some help if possible.

2008 Alfa 159 JTDM 1.9.

Ok yesterday, with car fully warmed up, was exiting off the motorway slip road, coasting about 1/3 of a mile, came to the roundabout, booted it in 1st and noticed a fair bit of smoke from the exhaust (thought it was blue but not 100%)

At the time I thought the car was doing a DFP regen on the motorway as the fuel computer went through the floor and I had the tell tale burning smell. As a result I thought nothing of the smoke. Anyhow car clears, no more smoking and is running 100%.

So just now I was coming off the same motorway junction so I replicated yesterday's drive, coasting 1/3 of a mile to the roundabout. This time at the roundabout all power is lost and the car stutters, misfires and there is a loud rattle from the engine bay. Car cuts out other side of the roundabout. After 5 mins I try to start it and it starts, lumpy as anything and there is that rattle that's is coming from the right hand side of the engine (as you look at it) I manage to drive it home and the lumpiness is intermittent, one minute it's there, the next it's gone.

Cambelt/waterpump is due right now.

Any ideas what this is? I'm my mind the coasting in gear is what triggered it. Injector fault? It's currently in limp home mode.

Cheers guys! Bloody 1st modern diesel!

Ps no warning lights or messages came up on the dash and the car has done 170k

Just had the car out again, no power under 3k, looks like a gummed up egr? The rattle is the dmf when the car misfires at idle. Can also hear a chuff, injector seal?

Sounds like a clogged up DPF - usually has the effect of strangling the performance

Several potential cures - easiest to try is an "Italian tune-up", otherwise known as a damn good thrashing. Drive it hard for a prolonged period.

Next is to try something like a Terraclean treatment - often works very well

Next up is a replacement dpf - not cheap

Finally, if you're willing to take the risk, you could have the dpf gutted (keep the casing and remove the innards). Technically illegal, but won't fail the MOT test (it's currently only a visual check for the presence of the dpf in the system). Would probably need a remap at the same time, but this is a good excuse to lose the egr as well. Performance and economy would both be improved.

Blocked dpf

It'll get worse and then stop

No power below 3k is classic symptoms of a blocked egr, easy to strip if your okay with the spanners.

Thank you for the advice guys, I took advantage of Euro car parts Jan
Offer and stuck a new EGR valve on - power returned and the car now boosts as it should. There is now a sub 1.5k rpm shudder on throttle. With the DMF clanking abit I'm assuming it's that, I'm giving the car a full service tomorow and going to disconnect the battery for an hour see if it helps... cars turning into a bit of a project, I'm planning to do the motormech EGR/DPF delete and remap, auto lusso adjustable bushes, decent tyres, terraclean/de flap, uprated springs and SMF GTA clutch conversion. Hoping once done I'll end up with a sorted Alfa, my last one (156 v6) was bullet proof once I'd invested a couple of grand and fixed what the previous owner gave up on. Wish I'd started with a 2.4 but hey ho!

Thanks guys

I'm very biased (I work there part time) but the results are great - my son's 159 diesel is done - gets over 50mpg. My GT diesel is done - now much quicker, smoother and economy is amazing (60+ mpg if trundling with traffic).

Consider a Terraclean treatment while you're there

Brilliant, that's just the feedback I was after, must say the company has priced the work keenly.

Hi guys just to update this thread - I fitted a new EGR which resolved the issue 80%, I then fitted an EGR restrictive plate off eBay and the car is now 100%, the car is now smooth and boosts cleanly from 1600rpm onwards, full acceleration is now restored. My plans for the car are a deflap, egr/dpf removal and remap and a new manifold - I'll then be totally happy. Thank you for all your help!
