GTV V6 gear selection troubles

Hi all.

Struggling with fifth and sixth gears in my 1998 GTV V6. Has anyone else suffered this? Fifth is difficult to engage, sixth can be found with a lot of trouble (lifting the reverse collar and stirring the gear lever around eventually finds it). The car wants to jump straight back to fourth even when applying gentle pressure towards the driver when attempting to engage sixth from fifth. Hoping it will be a simple fix.

Bought mine with a really poor shift across the 3/4th, 5/6th gate. Turned out to be a partial seizure of the mechanism on top of the gearbox which I stripped and lubricated as well as damage to the gear lever base plate under the gaiter more than likely caused by the stiff change. The gearbox mechanism is easy, the gear lever I had to remove from under the car. As a temp fix I used washers and self tapping screws to fasten the gear lever base back together until time allowed to replace the parts properly.

Thank you for this, I will investigate. It's merely an annoyance at the moment but will need rectifying going forward.
