GTV electrics - alarm?
Discussion
I've had my S-reg GTV V6 for three years. I have never used the black box for central locking, preferring the key, and never put the radio on. All was well electrically, until recently. Three months ago, the light above the headlamp height adjuster started to flash continually. I now seem to have a battery drain, and the hazard lights come on when it is started - and also sometimes engage when driving in traffic.
Something similar happened with my Elan M100, the cure was to "simplify" the electrics (ie, a specialist disconnected some stuff, specifically the alarm). My local garage doesn't want to meddle with it, but is this an easy fix? - or symptomatic of something less clear?

It has never worked properly on our GTV.... 11yrs and counting.
They key fob did nothing and I've never used that either. I did notice after a couple of years a cable hanging down was actually where the previous owner had disconnected the siren.
When the battery goes flat (yes there's a drain.... probably the sodding alarm in fact) the hazard lights go off when there's a voltage drop, so door open, foot on brake, wipers on, etc. This takes a little while to heal up, I guess the alarm finally gives itself up as properly stolen or similar.
The LED on the dash has flashed constantly other than when the battery is dead. Luckily it's behind the steering wheel in my line of sight when driving, else it would have stopped flashing.
The recode/replacement alarm link looks interesting though, would be good to have something that worked on it. I have a vague memory of reading somewhere that the central locking was linked to it as well... which would be very interesting as that has the occasional bout of thinking for itself as well, usually related to how much water is about.

just disconnect the control box - you might be lucky and find that the factory fitted it into the space around the gear shift. lift the gearstick surround and root around for a (usually) yellow box. unplug it and all will be well.
the meta alarm fitted to alfa's is notorious. fortunately, if you're bothered, many many folks out there can refurb them without too much wallet grief
