IS IT RAINING UP THERE YOUR HEAD MUST BE SO HIGH IN THE CLOUDS Exchanging any 4 pot lancia fiat twincam engine is a straight forward swap the only setback is restrictive room around turbo for the latter engines as induction and exhaust were reversed on these engine in 1984 as for the gear linkage Hawk cars sell a conversion to convert montecarlo box to later alfa v6 lancia dedra thema and fiat16v turbo (all the same box with slightly different final drive ratios)i bought the conversion kit for my stratos replica it included all engine mounts engine stabalizer and gear linkage rods for £495 I have years of experiance with lancias having imported over 100 integrales and prepared and maintained grp n and grp a integrales The most recent larger engine replacement i did was v6 3.0 24v alfa in place of standard 2.0ltr 4 cyl monte it took 50 hrs
(see wwww.stratossupersite.com galleries syndicate) As for the 037 stradale for 50k euros the advert is over 10 yrs old if it was for sale now id be checking in at the airport with cash in my pocket 1 recently made over £50 k on ebay was not sold as it had £80k reserve on it www.autocollections.com have 1 for sale at just over £90k its quite a nice 1 so atatty genuine 037 will be how much more than a replica thanks for everyone input

Can you provide a direct link to the conversions at the StratosSupersite? All I can find is the Stratos replica, which looks to be pretty good work.

The original 037 is a molested montecarlo/scorpion tub (if you can tell me how to make a replica without one of these im all ears)
However you dont need to start with a mint tub so you could be saving a rare car from certain death (creating an awsome replica and saving the planet)
3k for a 18 piece bodykit thats taken from a 70k car in choice of stradale and group b made to very high quality by TVR/S top tradesmen (remind me how much is the cheapie mr2/mx5 kit

Whilst we may not agree on how to treat Montecarlos (a Monte is a rare car in its own right... I would argue that the prototype shown in my previous post is just as aesthetically pleasing as an 037), I'll admit that I've got to hand it to anyone who subscribes to the moral of "saving the planet" by converting a Monte into an 037-lookalike; why not add high-lift cams and twin-turbos whilst you're at it - then you can really save the planet

fiat16, I must bow to your greater knowledge of these engines than I. If a 20v engine is going to be that difficult to fit I guess that I'd have to stick with the 16v!

You do seem to worry a bit too much about what other people think. If my car is what I want and I like it how it is, then that's all that matters. You will always find people who will for whatever reason find cause to look down their noses at other folks cars, be it a Lotus 7 driver looking at a Westfield, or a Cobra owner looking at any of the Cobra kits. Being a TVR Wedge driver I know very well that some drivers of later TVRs look down on the Wedges and older TVRs as being the poor relations. The point is that it doesn't matter if it's a Montecarlo to a 037, a MR2 to a Ferrari or a BMW 318i with a M3 kit, as long as the conversion is well engineered and well finished, the only thing that matters is that the driver is happy living a dream that he would never be able to attain due to an orginal vehicle being out of his reach.

Are you talking about Hawk Cars as in the replica Stratos / Cobras etc company? I called them today and asked about the engine conversion kit... I quote exactly:

I said:
I read an Internet article which claimed you sell an engine conversion kit for the Montecarlo

Hawk Cars said:
We don't get involved with Montecarlos at all

I said:
Err...sorry for wasting your time...

Did I call the wrong company? Google doesn't seem to turn up anything on conversion kits, nor do the forums frequented by Lancisti...

Is there another Hawk that specialise in Lancia?

Thanks in advance.

Yeah, John means Hawk Cars as in the Stratos replica, but the conversion kit is specific to that kit, i.e. for converting a HF2000 (Fiat/Lancia 2 litre 4-pot) to a HF3000 (Alfa 3 litre V6). I know someone in the States - he's on the Lancisti.net forum - he converted his Montecarlo to Thema power.

Cheers, Chris

Thanks, Chris.

I've checked out the Lancisti site and it seems the conversion is every bit as involved as the Waterhouse conversion that cost the owner £15K. If you have the space to do it in your own time, not to mention access to qualified engineers, I guess the conversion could be carried out for a fraction of £15K.

As I've mentioned before, the gear shift on the BW Thema-engined beast was very strange indeed and an associate who races in the Intermarque who drove it wasn't impressed with the shift at all, although he said the performance was properly into supercar league.

I'm planning on fitting Leda suspension and either 4 or 6-pot calipers with vented discs, but I'm really not sure about the engine and I can easily see a conversion by a pro costing five figures.

A standard Monte is a frustrating car IMO; superb handling, shame about the lack of power and brake fade... How Fiat / Lancia could've put a relatively decent (about 145 BHP IIRC) engine in the VX and then put such a docile lump in the Monte is beyond my comprehension...

BTW - I hope I haven't offended anyone with my opinion on 037-lookalikes. Subjective debates are best left for discussion in person; on the 'web, they can come over far too serious, as opposed to in person say, at a pub, where you can put a smile on it and say, "you can't seriously do that..." Vive la difference I guess.

BTW - ironically, the Monte has different mounts to the standard Beta / Fiat TC mounting points, so even substituting a VX engine is a job not to be taken lightly.

Edited to say that, much as I love a Monte, I wouldn't condone breaking a VX (a cool car in its own right) unless it's really far gone - just in case anyone takes offense to the idea!
