Been looking around, and a local independant has this -

2001 51, 156 2.4 JTD Veloce
Sportwagon, Manual 5 speed, Diesel, 51,000 miles, Black with black leather upholstery. Air conditioning, Alloy wheels, Electric mirrors, Electric windows, Foglights, Full service history, Remote locking, Roof rails

and theyre looking for £5400 for it... any opinions on pricing, or specific things to ask before a test drive?

If it's as good as described I would say buy it, try and knock them down to about 5,200 and I think you've got a bargain.

Sounds very fair. Check mileage is genuine - a lot of JTDs are intergalactic. Also as it is 6 years old this year it will need a cambelt service so you need to factor that into this years running. Other than listen out for clonks and bonks from the suspension bushes, and check insides of tyres for wear. Lovely cars. Had one for four years myself.

Would'nt the cam belt have been done at the 48,000 service?

That is when they are doing them with the fleet at work.

I wouldn't have thought so on a 2.4 10 valve.
Obviously worth checking if it has been already though!

I don't believe they are on the 10 valve. You very rarely hear of any problems. It's a strong and simple engine. Just get it done within the service intervals so as not to push your luck!

I was advised to change belts on my 156 JTD 10V every 36k miles or 3 years (used to be 72k!)

Never heard of probs on a 2.4 10V. Had mine done at Medway Alfa & it wasn't a fortune.
They found the rattling noise I'd panicked about occasionally was the aux belt tensioner dead!

Alfa have revised the schedule on the Twin Sparks to that, but not on the 10v JTD.

Quick update-
the garage did the belts, and a new tensioner for me

i checked the book, full dealer history etc, phoned the Alfa main dealer, mileage checks out.

he put it through MOT, and it comes with a full years tax

got him down to £5000 dead. I think a decent deal...

one question- do i need to do HPI on this? not sure if i should need to from a dealer....

If it is from a dealer i would have thought it would automatically be done. Most dealers pay an amount per month and then have the ability to do as many HPI checks as they like.
