Rebuilding 2 ltr TS

Hi all
Gonna get the GTV back on the road but I'm looking at rebuilding the engine myself to a higher speck. has anyone done this themselves and what parts did they use with what outcome.
Not done any engine work myself for a few years but I plan on building the engine up from the bottom as its burning oil and running on three cylinders along with a slight rattle at a constant 2000rpm from the crank. When completed I'm thinking of getting chipped and tuned by a specialist. The tuning will be out of my realm.
I'm want to get hold of a manual in cd-rom form. Anyone know of a good one.
Any help will be much appreciated. Its a 97 with no aircon.
