Sporty Abarth marque lives again

New Fiat Grande Punto gets seriously sporty

Fiat's reviving the famous Abarth performance and sporting marque with a more sporty version of the Grande Punto, along with a racing and rallying programme.

Fiat reckoned that the decision was made some time ago to revive the marque, and that the instigation of an Abarth division had to be more than a bit of badge engineering. So at next week’s Geneva motor show, Fiat will unwrap the new Grande Punto Abarth, the first road-going product of the new division.

The Grande Punto Abarth gets a 1.4 turbocharged petrol engine that delivers 150bhp at 5,500 rpm, boosted to 155bhp with 98RON petrol in the tank. Peak torque of 152lb-ft is developed at 2,000 rpm, but 169lb-ft is produced at 3,000 rpm when the driver activates Sport mode. If that's not enough, Fiat will also sell an aftermarket booster kit that hikes power to 180bhp, almost three times that of the entry level Punto.

All of which Fiat reckoned is a revival of past traditions: for example, the 1957 Fiat 500 delivered 13bhp at 4,000 rpm with a top speed of 53 mph, while the Fiat 500 Abarth of the same year delivered over 20bhp at 5,000 rpm and a top speed of 73 mph.

Fiat reckoned its new car would revive the feats of these entertaining performance cars and offer young enthusiasts in particular an opportunity to enter the world of motorsport in complete safety and at an accessible price.

The Abarth division will also run its own racing and rally teams, starting with the Grande Punto Abarth S2000, which won both the Italian and European rally championship titles last year in its debut season. The new Abarth division will also prepare racing and rally cars for customers in a wide range of series and one make championships, said Fiat.

Abarth plans to repeat its 2006 competition debut by entering the 2007 Italian Rally Championship with Giandomenico Basso and co-driver Mitia Dotta. On the international scene, the Grande Punto Abarth S2000 will compete in the IRC (Intercontinental Rally Challenge) with drivers Andrea Navarra, and co-driver Guido D’Amore, together with the young Umberto Scandola and Anton Alen.

Powered by a 2000cc normally aspirated engine that delivers 270bhp, with four-wheel drive, the latest Grande Punto Abarth S2000 is a development of the machine that won the 2006 Italian Rally Championship with Paolo Andreucci and Anna Andreussi, winning seven of the 11 events in the series. During the same season, Giandomenico Basso/Mitia Dotta also won the European Rally Championship and the International Rally Challenge, with a similar car.

Abarth will also develop performance and styling packages for the owners of existing Fiat products. Promotion of merchandise and clothing lines will also be a key element in the company’s plans for Abarth.

About Abarth

Founded in 1949 by Carlo Abarth, the Abarth company produced classic sporting versions of key Fiat models and ran racing teams that were dominant forces on both the race track and on rally stages. The scorpion badge was chosen as a clear indication of what Abarth was all about – small cars with a big sting in the tail.

The new Abarth & C. company includes a total of 113 experts, including 26 engineers, 43 on the manufacturing side of the business and nine dedicated purely to motorsport, reckoned Fiat.

“The link with tradition is not just an idea, but tangible and concrete,” said Fiat CEO Luca de Meo. “This is a real rebirth, that will start with the triumphant return of Abarth activities to our historic premises in Corso Marche, Turin, where the famous ‘Officine Abarth’ will be recreated.”

Looks like Fiat's getting serious about motorsport again....

Not a bad looking car either. FIAT seemed to be making all the right moves at the moment. If the price is right they're onto a winner.

If i had been to Fiat Centro Stile in Turin, and had seen and spoken to designers about the Grande Punto Abarth, i would be able to tell you that they are planning a road version of the S2000 rally car, with 240bhp and 4wd, and the wider track, all for around £18k, likely to be the Abarth S.

But i haven't, so that must all be lies.

Your honour.

Sounds like it should be a lot of fun!

It's been a shame that recently the Abarth name has just meant spoilers and stuff on little Fiats, good to see this time they're increasing performance too.

Looks great on paper, although the insurance group this gets put into could spell success or failure.

Glad to see Fiat riding a wave at the moment

Homologation special is called the Brutale and there will only be the 250 made needed to meet homologation requirements. Prices I've been hearing whispers of are more like £80k not £18k.

Could be a completely different model so perhaps more lies...

240bhp 4wd hot hatch for £18k would be nice under 2 conditions, they actually build as has been said. And they build it well!!!

Having worked in Automotive Electronics I can say its a miracle Fiat get anything on the road.

Must admitt that looks lush. Guess it won't be too long before someone devolpes a crappy, ugly, chavvy body kit for it.

they've not all been like that although the stilo abarth was more warm than hot, even with a 2.4 5 pot...

240bhp sounds nice though!

To be honest it was more the Seicento I was thinking of, where the Sporting and the Sporting Abarth were the same, just the Abarth had more plastic bits stuck on.

I think you could get the same engine as the 3-door Stilo Abarth in the 5-door Stilo Prestigio?

But regardless of any of that, this new one looks good and that's the main thing.

So this 'Brutale' thing (what a cool name ) does it make it's 240bhp from a NA 2.0L four cylinder or is it turbo charged?

If it is NA, then it's gunning for the S2000s crown of highest specific output per litre in a production car surely? Must rev to buggery (or 9000rpm) to make that sort of output. Sounds good, I think this 1.4L turbo thing sounds like a better day to day propistition though.

What would be even cooler though, would be the same 1.4L turbo engine into the Panda along with it's AWD drivetrain, now that would have me very, very interested, because there isn't much to match that sort of spec, except a few Japan only models like the Daihatsu Boon x4, and they aren't exactly easy to come by.

Someone will probably come along and debunk what i've said again, but i've heard that the reason they didn't stick the Abarth badge on the Panda 100HP is that there is an Abarth version coming as well, with the 1.4 turbo engine putting out c.130bhp, and a more aggressive bodykit.

Yeah I know what you mean about the seicento's...

you could also get the engine in the 5-dr prestigio although the abarth had uprated suspension over the other models.

You're right though, it does look good!

Agree it looks pretty. It is a shame that the Abarth badge/name has been abused before, hopefully a 180bhp Punto can alter that

Perhaps they had a few old Uno Turbo engines left over...

"Hey Mario, how about we remap the old Uno engines, stick 'em in the Grande Punto and cover them with one of those plastic engine covers to make it look modern and then stick an Abarth badge on the car's ass?"

"Aroldo, that sounds like the best idea I've heard this week! Time for our 3 hour lunch break now - let's talk about this later!"

And the Punto Abarth was born...

Very true but outright power is never the whole story, is it ? The Elise isn't exactly awash with the stuff but it still does the business very well. There are many other examples - Fabia vRS being my personal favourite. Now then a DIESEL Abarth ? That would be worth having.
