Nooooooooooo!!! Dead Alfa!
Discussion
She went in for a service on Monday........... job done.
"Can you check the rattly engine noise whilst you're at it please?"
Phone call 5 mins ago;
"Cam covers were loose, camshafts are rounded off and cylinder heads foobared. 4 new camshafts and 2 x cylinder heads - total comes to more than we paid for the car".
Anyone know of any good breakers or of a 156 2.5 V6 engine we can salvage parts?

Phuck - commiserations...
possible silver lining - you could maybe get a 3.0 or even 3.2 w/ECU from the scrappie?

Mr Purse strings is angling for camshaft and cylinder head replacements only....so looking for those or a bottom end gone engine.
Have found a direect replacement for £875 + VAT which I thought was okay...........
Is it worth getting a second opinion? If the cam covers were loose it would have been leaking oil very badly. Myabe it's the terminology that's being used and they might have meant that the camshaft bearings were loose? Even then, I'm not familiar with that engine but I'd have thought it highly unlikely. I've a feeling they get a pressurised oil feed and if they were loose, you should have had low (or no) oil pressure. Just sounds a bit odd that's all. Good luck!

She may yet live (and I've not seen the damaged parts yet, but this is an Italian specialist that looks after a mates 'Grale Evo 1, so I tend to trust him).
All 4 cams, both heads, 30 day return if they're not good, delivered for 370 quid.
Result I think. Well done to the Bint.

What did the rattly sound sound like exactly?
Worried about mine now!

Upon start up mainly, slightly diesely BUT we have read notes on an Alfa
forum about an alternative problem that sounds like that.
Ours sounds like the major service it had last year (by previous owner) was
done by monkeys who didn't tighten things up properly afterwards.
Have it checked out anyway, my mother's notorious for hearing weird noises
and catching things in time. She didnt' hear this one.....
But yes, £370 for all parts and delivery, plus another £500+ for fitting etc. (it's 11 hrs work)

I've got a 156 V6 with bent con rods but everything else is salvageable - just had cambelt service, water pump, etc. too. Am going to sell it for spares or repair.
Oh hello...............
That bargain I found - camshafts and cylinders for £300 odd, with 30 day warranty I may add, Mr E has been told it may not be okay.... He's awaiting a phone call.
I notice you're only in Oxford too, how convenient What reg car/is it a phase 3 engine? and how much for the bits we need?! Or are you not bothering to break her?
LexSport said:
It's a 99 T reg. I wasn't planning to break it myself tbh but if the heads can be salvaged then I might be able to replace the engine and get shot of it as a runner. Drop me a mail if it might be of use to you.
Doubtful. Unless your engine number ends in 324.05 as we need phase 3 parts, that sounds like it MIGHT be a phase 2.
TBH, a replacement engine to fit will cost as much as the car is worth (it's also something we've considered).
Shame. I'll check the engine number, but suspect you're right. As for the cost of a replacement engine, you're probably right again. Just trying to figure out the easiest way to get something back from it.
Will let you know if the engine number checks out. If not, sorry I couldn't be any help after all.

It's very annoying about the deal I thought I had - simply because the being broken had brand spanking new cams and skimmed heads. Just the wrong ones..... Bum

Many thanks for looking my friend. If it's a phase 3 engine you may well dig us out of a hole.

Bugger. As you say, sounds like dodgy servicing previously, or maybe someone let it get very low on oil at some stage. That's not normal wear.
The "diesel like" rattly Alfa engines you hear about so often on forums tend to be the twin sparks with failed sensors. The V6's can get a little rattly with age but nothing like that - an SZ-owning friend of mine used to run 164 V6's to stratosperic mileages as his daily drivers and they never got close to "diesel" noises, just a tiny bit of background chatter.
