I am interested in an 01 51k JTD 156 but the seller describes a "whistling noise" which, according to his mechanic, is nothing to worry about. Is this true or is it the start of a turbo going bang?

Its a lovely car but its a niggly doubt!

I have had mine for three years and you can hear the turbo spool up when the near side front window is open only. Hope this helps put it in perspective. Also check that the engine under tray is still fitted as it has a sound deadening matting on the top side.

Yes. There is a whistling noise. Sometimes can sound like a police siren.

And I thought it might just be they were admiring the driver

So I take it that its nothing to worry about then..

Trying to broker a deal with a private seller to swap in the 206 + cash for this one. The 206 is the missus car and means she will have to use the Celica as I will be needing something to commute a fair distance week on week.

Celica & 156 is a great combination!

I too have a strange whistling coming from the engine on idle, only noticed it recently and it's not majorly loud, but I'd be interested if anyoen else has experienced this on the V6.....

I was really looking at just an economical daily saloon to accompany the Elise and keep the 206 for the missus. However, the more I look at the 156 (and the performance for the diesel) its making sense as it will probably be more entertaining than most of the diesel saloons. The plan was to buy the g/f a sports car for her birthday/xmas anyway so if we lose the 206 now and keep the celica until the end of the year it would probably make sense.
