Fiat 500 Twinair fuel economy
Discussion
Well I've done 70 miles this afternoon in it and something positive has definitely happened as a result of the work the dealer has done.
It's done over 45 mpg when previously it wouldn't go about 41 (That's 41 in eco mode). Having said that it now doesn't go like a scalded cat, indeed it behaves more as I would have expected from a car with 80 odd bhp.

The coil pack recall affects a lot of the twinair engines, and any dealer can easily tell you if it has already been carried out or is due on your vehicle. It's recall number 5685 they're looking for. There's a lot that can alter the operation of the stop/start system, but the chief culprits seem to be; battery (low mileage car not getting enough charge to work consistently), air conditioning (the extra load it places on the battery generally means no stop/start) or a combination of things such as using the wipers, headlights or heated rear window. The latter three are not things you'd perhaps think of, but will all impose on the operation of stop start.
Oh, and for what it's worth, my personal best on a run in a TwinAir 500 is around 54mpg, though I was driving like a saint. Real world, it's closer to 38mpg. ALso worth noting that I tried an Alfa Mito with the same engine and didn't enjoy it. In the 500 the engine sparkles, in the Alfa it just seems wrong.

My partners 'Gucci' is going in for its coil pack recall next week. Its a June 2012 car and has done 8000 miles, the vast majority of which were round town.My partner is a good driver and drives the car gently.MPG has averaged 41.7 over that time.
Just out of interest what service intervals are everyone running to?I seem to think they are 2 years or 18000 miles but I'm tempted to put ours in at 10000 miles when it it is around 18 months old for its first service.

Id recommend doing it once a year. I serviced my 1.2 pop 5000 miles/1 year after the previous service and found that one of the brakes was stuck. Once fixed it obviously made the car feel so much faster. I thinks its worth having somebody get underneath and give a check every now and then.
Sorry to revive an old thread chaps but a question..
This weekend I unexpectedly need to rent a car. My M5 is going through some work, swmbo needs her car and the shed is in Scotland with my nephew.
I'm not going all that far, just London to Bristol. I need a car whilst I'm there otherwise I'd just take the train. I might even go by train and rent something there, but it's easier doing it in London where I know my way around etc.
To cut a long story short my rental choices are a new shape Hyundai i10 (v well reviewed) or a Fiat 500. I'm assuming twinair (might be a 1.2).
These are both from Alamo. Assuming both will do 40-50mpg, which would you take? And will they do 50mpg overall?
I'm quite unfamiliar with small cars, but my limited experience of a twinair was ok. small, slow, rev happy small hatchback. The Hyundai's are meant to be much much better in the last few years.. which leaves me wondering
