Dear PH,

Why has Oliver Moore sent out an email in the last few minutes to a large group of recipients showing all our email addresses?

Data Protection and all that!

Seconded.

The spam itself irritated me enough, and that's before I noticed nothing had been kept private.

Not sure Data Protection has ever been PH's strong point, given that the login form is not https.

I wonder if our passwords are salted and use decent hashing algorithm?

Hi everyone

SH: Sara Howers. HMG Privacy Officer.

We have looked into this and it was caused by a human error, it was a university student who is currently here on work placement

Please accept our sincere apologies that this has happened, as we do really care about the security of your data. Please contact me directly if you wish to discuss this further or have any questions, at email: datacontroller@haymarket.com

Aww, and I thought that I was one of a special few.

Funny that they asked us to keep the discount code super-secret but don't mind publicising all our email addresses... (although I'm well aware the "please don't share this discount code it's just for you select people" is only there to make us think we're special and more likely to buy)

It's all a bit... desperate, isn't it?

Would recommend e-mailing that to everyone on the list in case they don't see this thread. (edit: by BCC!)

While on the subject of data protection - are you able to divulge how passwords are stored? If you're using something sufficiently safe then it's no compromise to security by revealing it.

One of us might as well email them. Haha! Actually that's a pretty good 'trolling' list - now where is that 'Brake' newsletter form...

I imagine the passwords are kept in an extremely secure cryptographically secure plain-text biscuit-tin.

There was a last time? Got a link?

Perhaps in future Haymarket should provide placement students with the appropriate training on data protection regulations and use of e-mail systems before being entrusted with our data.

Calling for someone to get the sack is something of an over reaction.

No big deal for me. These things happen and all that.

I'm not that fussed to be honest, these things happen and an email address to fellow members is not the end of the world!

I wonder if you'd feel the same if every website you ever registered on sent your e-mail address to a load of other members.

It sounds like it was an honest mistake by Oliver, but IMO Haymarket have been lax in allowing this to happen.
