Renault ZOE competition: the videos

So what is life with an EV really like? Two PHers had a week to find out

A little while back you may remember we ran a Renault ZOE competition. Two PHers were to be given a ZOE for a week to discover how they would get on out there in the real world of children, commutes and tip runs.

They have now done that, the videos have been edited and the experiences are ready to be shared. As well as Raihan and Richard from PH, there are What Car?, Stuff and mumsnet readers to hear from. From the videos and day-by-day logs there's an overall verdict from both also. Their views may surprise you...

Anyway, that's for you to find out on the microsite. Thanks to Richard and Raihan for taking part, plus Renault for organising the competition.

See the microsite here.

Are these real PHers then? Step forward! smile

Not sure what was surprising about the PHers' views on the Zoe... The whole thing's a Renault advert - they're hardly going to be controversial are they?

I do quite like the Zoe but I'm put off by Renault's battery leasing financial options. If the Leaf looked less dull I would consider it for the commute.

Ditto. That "battery lease" thing I don't like one bit.

Man maths - renault duracell versus citreon c1, c1 cheaper to buy, fill up with fuel travel 2-300 miles fill up and do another 2-300 miles cheap tax, cheap insurance
renault, dearer to buy, travel 150 miles wait a few hours to re charge (Cost of charging vehicle?? never mentioned in the sales pitch) saving the planet - hmmm not sure that is true and limited insurers to place the business with so may be paying a lot more per year to insure the car.

Why the renault or any other electric only car?

Interesting. I had one of these for an extended test drive recently and there was only one thing that really put me off (and effectively canned the sale) - the seating I found so uncomfortable - the seats are like sitting on a sloping bus stop bench which you sit on and not "in". Considering I haven't got any back problems and I'm not a silly shape etc this was quite annoying as I was really impressed with the car (strangely the new Twingo seemed to have the same seats?!).

In brief, compared to a ICE car, the refinement is years ahead - it really is like driving the future - there is no mechanical harshness, no noise, no vibration, the auto is one gear. The power is instant (although doesn't last forever), the real life full range is probably 100 miles in summer. When they can do 300 miles on a charge (at the right price) the sales will really take off.

I didn't particularly like the idea of the battery lease, but when you work out the actual electric cost (even when you're paying for it!) and the amount you wouldn't be spending on fuel, it does work out slightly better.

I've now looked at the Leaf, Up & i3 and for a variety of reasons couldn't pick any, so I've ordered a new Mii (again). One thing I will say though is the next new car I buy will be electric and if the advancement of progress is this good over the next 3-4 years, I would predict at least 30% of new cars will be electric.

I guess the association with Mumsnet has made this PH unworthy! hehe Shame because I think these are a far better proposition than any Hybrid nonsense.
