Just been told buy OPC my '99 75K miles new toy (1.5 months) was about to suffer complete engine failure. In for RMS and discovered an intermediate shaft was worn and about to fail. Fortunately warrantied. So, the question is which way do the forum think they'll go and should I have a preference?

They'll fit a new engine if it's OPC warranty.

They'll crate the old one back to Germany.

If it's a third party warranty expect a fight.

The remedy is completely based on economics, the least expensive is the winner every time.....

I'd be guessing the intermediate shaft bearing has shredded which will put swarf in the sump and all other moving parts. An engine replacement will be the most economical as a repair would be 40+ hours, plus parts.

It's an OPC warranty and they did say rebuild would be 40 odd hours, so I guess I should expect new engine. I'm assuming it's no bad thing apart from having to use the company Suzuki Supercarry to commute for the next few weeks!

If it's OPC warranty do they not have to supply a car for you?

Claim that as fault was found out of a breakdown situation, then not so

Yeah bizarre.

If the engine grenades you get a courtesy car.

Drive it into the OPC before it blows and you're on your own.

MORAL - get to within 50 yards of OPC at 90mph, drop it into first.

Ah, but then they detect an overrev type 1 (or whatever it is) and invalidate the claim becuase its your fault!

Engine in my 2001 C4 Cab went bang back in November - OPC initially stated engine replacement, but then Technical (i.e. the warranty police) requested further dismantling and investigation. On the 2nd iteration of this they decided to rebuild rather than replace. Car was on a recently renewed (couple of weeks before ) OPC warranty. Best £800 I ever spent.

Porsche assist provided a courtesy car in this instance as I was recovered at the roadside.

Took it as a sign from above that it was time to change cars and traded it in for a Turbo S.

Crikey! Me too - exactly the same situation today.
Took my '02, 36k mile 996 c2 in for 48k mile service (4 yrs old) yesterday. Informed yesterday that RMS needs replacing. Then told today that intermediate shaft bearing slightly worn so engine needs rebuild - ready on 10 April. GULP.
However, as I have a lovely new Boxter S as courtesy car, they said just hang on to it for as long as needed, so thats OK.
I had to go back to get personal stuff out of the car so got a good look at the poor old thing in bits all over the deck. Bloke I spoke to showed me the worn bearing, there was a small amount of visible play between shaft and bearing, and his view was that it was only slight wear but it would only get worse so a rebuild was a precautionary measure. OPC warranty is in place so big sigh of relief! I also got a look at the by now dismantled clutch and there was no sign of wear at all - even after 18k miles. (I really must adopt a more agressive driving style!).
So, your OPC said replacement engine, mine said rebuild in the same circumstances. So which is right?
Should I perhaps insist on a new rarter than rebuilt engine?
Love to hear your views on this one.

I think it shows you NEED the warranty on these cars.

Me too, but mine is the gearbox. Took it to the OPC as its whining , very loud in 5th and 6th. They told me they couldnt do anything until next week and had no car for me to borrow. I drove it across town and called the Porsche Assist. Car collected and E Class Merc delivered. I was told they dont replace full gearboxes anymore-they have to repair them.

yes

This week, a friend mentioned a wish for a 996 (at last, to celebrate his freedom after divorce). A quick reference to some URLs on this and he's now lying ill in bed, German engineering dream shattered!

Told him to look out for Kayc's tt but not sure he'll recover quickly enough....

Thought I'd take a stab at this - please feel free to add or alter figures. This was done on the spur of the moment, not based on facts.

Non GT3 or TT Cars sold in UK.........................20,000 (pick a time frame)
Number of OPC Warranted...............................10,000
Warranty income £......... ......................8,950,000
Of warranted, cars going bang/year.......................500
Bang repairs £......................................10,000
Cost to PAG of UK Bangs £........................5,000,000
Operating Revenue from Warranty income alone £...3,950,000

Anyone care to speculate on why the warranty went up so significantly this year?

edited to deal with too many inadvertent smiles and winks

Damn right yes

Out of interest, how much would the damage be for a fully fitted new engine into a 996/997 without the warranty (fitted by an OPC)?

I was led to believe that you would be relieved of 10k for a new engine, fitted. The OPC told me yesterday that a new gearbox is 7k.

996 is £12k, I believe. Pants down. No lube.
