Hi peeps.

My wipers have started to go all Frank Spencer on me. Usual stuff, wont work on intermittent and wont park in the correct place. I've had a search around and found it to be a common problem, usually the suspects being the relay and or the parking switch.

The questions being, does anyone have a part number for the relay. I believe it is a Vauxhall part but I took the relay to 2 motor shops today and neither could identify it. The relay (black) was made in Tunisia so I assume it is not original. I don't have a local GM garage so would like to source it without travelling miles

The other is about accessing the motor, mine is the 2000 model and I believe they are now in the foot well with the fuse box and battery, I read the instructions in the Bible but is it correct that you have to remove the whole fuse box to get to it? It seems if it is located behind this it would be near impossible to reach !!! Is this correct and has anyone removed the said item, a walkthrough would be great...........

Cheers

Jason

Wiper Timer relay is normally:
Windscreen Wiper Relay ~ Lucas/GM Part No.90 069 864, Mk3 Vauxhall Cavalier is a known deployment of it.

The wiper motor is under the dash on the driver's side, directly above the steering column, which is just visible in the bottom right of this picture. It looks like the air vent tube will have to be removed prior to any maintenance.

I had problems with parking and intermittent not working. Mine was the park switch on the motor rusted up and the resistor that controls the sweep delay on intermittent setting, the wire had broken off the back of it.

Soldered it back on and all sorted.

I have located the wiper motor and it is where Andy said it would be (is it still legal and morally right to hire midgets for this type off work rolleyes) But before I remove it does this type have a parking switch attached ? This one http://chimaerapages.com/resources_wi clearly does but the one under my dash is different altogether (well it looks so from the photo's) and I don't fancy removing it to find it has no external to change and the whole unit needs swapping. It is my daily so I would need to get the replacement part before hand if this is the case.

The part number is a great help, still can't get it locally so I'll pop to a GM dealer on Monday with the said number..............

Cheers

Interested that you guys have the wiper motor inside under the dash... on mine it is under the bonnet, infront of the windscreen on the near side. Looks like your motors are a bit more 'modern' looking too... is it still a helical wire and gear wheel drive, or some form of travelling linkage?

Make sure the relay hasn't come loose on the fuse board, this happened to me with the symptons you have, pushed the relay back in and it was OK.

Thanks John.

The said relay has been in and out like a nuns finger over the last few days, while trying to source one so I doubt it is that. On a side note the brake lights have stopped working (don't know if this is related or just coincidence) so I have 2 problems to chase.............

Guess that why we love Tiv's !!!!

Have a look at fuse number 18, 4th from right. It should be a 20A fuse and it controls brake lights and wiper park.

That is if the fusebox is the same layout.....

You star !!!!!

Fixed the brake lights tonight, it was a fuse but not the size or position of the "bible" said it would be !!! I shorted out the brake switch to make sure it wasn't the problem (metered it and it worked but thought just on the safe side). So I went through every fuse till I found a blew one (not an easy job in the foot well) only to find one blown. Hey presto the brakes where now working !!!

For the life of me I would of never thought the wiper park would be on the same circuit but after reading this I popped down to find the wipers now park bounce

We live and learn......................

Cheers Andy you made my day

Now go to go and cancel that relay I have just ordered phone

Bugger !!!!

My problem is back Grrrrrrrrr !! The wipers have blown the fuse twice this week, It seems that they work fine and then on the intermittent return (i.e coming back from the drivers side) they just stop and blow the fuse.

This takes out the brakes lights as well, which is not good. I have the under drivers dash wiper motor, as stated, but it doesn't seem to have a parking switch like the in engine bay type. Is it internal or located somewhere else ? Also the fault seems to me as the wipers hit a dryer windscreen, as the rain eases, it seems to not be able to cope with the extra friction. Has anyone noticed this and do they now of a fix. I had a look for the running gear to grease up (thought it might help with the smooth running) but can't see it. Is it located behind the dash ?

Cheers

not completely on topic but related....just fitted new wiper blades and did what one of the cerbie boys did and fitted a 16" on the drivers side and a 14" wiper on the passenger side. doing this enables you to get the wiper blades parking right down on the bottom of the windscreen instead of half-way up it... looks loads better....
