UPS Delivery Truck Goes Racing

Tuner adds 425bhp V8 to delivery truck package

Its not every day you get to see something genuinely surprising, but a two tonne UPS truck blasting round a race track raised a few eyebrows here.

This video shows how the truck was stripped of every non-essential part, including the passenger seat, while a 425-hp V8 was shoe-horned in. The team added Koni shocks, a new rear axle, larger brakes and new springs and tyres. It even got a trendy cartoon vinyl wrap.

Make sure you check out the video below, and our sincere apologies for the dodgy soundtrack, but that’s Germans for you.

I always remember reading a review of the latest Gruman UPS van in a car magazine, where the reviewer referred to is as "Half a million rivets flying in close formation".

Looks a little tidier than the XJ220 Transot van but I know which one I'd rather have !

I've always wondered what those UPS vans were based on?
The Morgan Olson Route Star used to be the Grumman Olson P-800, on which the UPS trucks were based, several different chassis are used.

Thankyou thumbup

I don't know why I suspected that they were old Merc vans?

Any idea on the drivetrain for them?
This (pdf) is the Freightliner chassis they use in the US, I'm afraid I don't know which the truck in the video was built up on.

Watched the video with the sound off, much more interesting to imagine a badly dubbed Eurotrash type commentary.
In the US I think you could just specify a V10 Triton E350 chassis off the shelf,I hired a 5.4l V8 Econoline minibus last year that could do big smokey doughnuts, and have most things off the lights up to 40!

I've seen 3 point stars in the center of the weels on some in the UK. Now it might just be the hub assembly, or they might be based on Merc chassis.

They are indeed old Mercedes 7.5 ton chassis and piece of crap 4 pot engines. Now slowly being withdrawn due to the emissions. In the US they routinely run 30 year old trucks as you can still buy off the shelf engines when they break, in Europe you cant. Mercedes have a warehouse dedicated to supplying parts for UPS trucks across Europe although now we are having to source second hand parts and in some cases machining new parts especially as they are no longer made

The Bus company here always used Bedford tow trucks with a two stroke detroit diesel V8 they had large stainless exhaust pipes at the back of the cab and i would go as far to say was one of the best sounding engines i ever heard
