Mods, I've posted this here because I doubt it will be seen in the 'sports' forum by appropriate people. Would be nice if it could stay here.

Anyway, I got dragged round a golf course the other week and amzingly I quite enjoyed it. I'm looking to maybe buy a set of clubs for no more £200 and there is an amazing array of stuff at this price (even seen some 'Bay Hill' clubs that look ok for £99).

What should I be loking for? Can anyone point me to a decent set? I thought this set looked ok, am I wrong?

Don't they use sticks or stumps or something?......

Judging by yesterday, no.

I do believe you are meant to take less than 11 to hole out.

(Still got my handicap cut though )

I'd also be interested in what's recommended for a beginner? Should I ask the club pro and buy some assorted second hand clubs the right length for me - or should I buy a cheapish set from a golf discount store?

Nope. You are thinking of Snooker Racquets.

You will find that the correct terminology is Golf Sticks.

As in Jolly Golf Sticks.

Did you have a look at the link I posted to those John Daly clubs? They seem good for the price, but as I said, I know nothing yet.

I'd start at the 'pound shop' just now and get some gaily painted plastic ones

just in case you lose interest

then we'll not all laugh at you

You don't want John Daly clubs.

You'll find you're eating 14 burgers and fries every time you play golf, and feel an urge to play the Cavern Club as a talentless amateur musician.

Go for the Tiger Woods specials every time.

I imagine golf shops will have a large uptake in beginners sticks/bats/poles now the open is over; now might be a good time to go shopping.

I expect so, that's why some advice would be nice.

Your best bet is a pro shop, and buy a second hand set of decent clubs. Discount clubs from a bulk outlet are still just that - cheap clubs.

Some people will trade in a good set with relatively little use, and you can get a decent set for much the same money 'pre-owned' as a naff set from a discount place.

And you can always sell on the second-hand set with minimal depreciation.

Bit like cars, really...

Can't abide Golf. I'm afraid the only advice I can offer you is...

What about any that might be on offer though? Or does that not really happen?

I've just been having a chat with a golfist friend of mine and he recommended some pre-owned sticks too.
