Can it be done? I am aware of some E60's have the removable ones fitted from the factory but can they be retro fitted to either an E39 or E60?

ps. fully aware of the sacrilegious nature of the question.

Yes.

ETA: Not so sure about retro fitted, but from factory, yes. So I sort think, yes you could.

And your assumption that I "strut around" in my car is based on what? In my opinion a towbar on an M5 would ruin the looks and doesn't really fit in with the sporting pedigree of the M badge

Seriously mate, pull your head out of your arse. ///M badge sporting pedigree my arse. It's not about that.

We all know a tow bar isn't great for looks, but I brought the M5 for it's all round ability to swallow luggage, take 4 people in utter comfort at 160mph, hit back roads, but ALSO occasionally take me away when I want to go riding etc.

I couldn't do that in a 996.

It also has other benefits, such as peace of mind against 'parisian parkers' and the ability to help out when someone needs a race trailer pulled or such like.

However, if you knew you're BMW, you'd know that the M5 tow bar system is removeable and can be quickly and easily stowed in the spare wheel space in the boot, and a flush fitting cover applied - you'd never know it was there.

Feel silly now do we?

With your luck, tow bars on cars are useful - either to tow a broken down car, or to be towed hehe

Are there E60s with tow bars? I was of the understanding that only the E61 had towbars as an option.

Not really, more bored with your inane rambling. Nice to see you agree with me about spoiling the looks though - which was my original point. Not that you asked.

Yea, you'd never notice it had a towbar when it's pulling a caravan.

The OP didn't ask whether you had an opinion on it's looks in the first place, so I rather think it's you rambling. I've answered the question for him, unlike you.

Schools back soon though, eh mate?

You're very defensive about this tow bar aren't you?

Not really. Just planks like you coming up with ste on threads where people are just asking a question, not inviting pointless opinions.

I couldn't care less about the looks - yes I've stood an had a 10 minute discussion about the tow bar with fellow BMW beards, but at the end of the day, when we all pile into the thing and do this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_mfk58IW8uY none of us were particularly bothered about the looks.

Got your Easter eggs from mum yet?

ETA: Note the tow bar on the back.

Funny that. That's not what she said to me the other day.

Anyway. Enjoy the 535.

Yes, it can definitely be done on the E39 as I did it a couple of weeks ago to the car I bought in January. The OE ones seem pretty rare so I did not narrow my search to just those that already had a tow bar (in fact having viewed a good half dozen on sale none of them had a towbar). It was a bit of a risk as noone seemed that sure that you could retrofit it but in the end it was no real trouble as the Westfalia bar is designed to just bolt in place and you only need to cut the lower valance and a bit of metal out of the inner bumper. As Neil has already said it is removeable and although I have not yet bought the cover for the bit I cut out and painted it to match the car I'm sure that once that is fitted it will look almost the same as it did originally, apart from when I put the towball on to actually tow of course. For me I probably wouldn't have bought the car if I was not able to sometimes tow with it - and it does a fantastic job of it incidentally!

An M5 with a towbar is a great idea. It simply adds to the fantastic "all rounder" nature of a sublime motor car. When you're not towing, it looks decidedly normal.......
