The PH Driving Challenge
Test your skills and get on the PH leader board
Plans Motorsport, the race and sports car specialist, has teamed up with PH to offer the “Pistonheads Challenge”.
Plans Motorsport runs driver experience sessions and driver training at its base at Dunsfold Park, near Guildford in Surrey. They use the very same 1.9 mile track made famous by BBC TV's Top Gear.
The format of the Challenge will be as follows:
Classroom Briefing
- Introduction to the session
- Safety briefing
- Introduction to the track
- Theory on technique.
One hour of tuition on the circuit in your own car
Tuition is entirely one-on-one and there is only ever car on the circuit at one time. Hence this is very exclusive and unique in the UK. Unless you are a McLaren SLR customer, or a “star in a reasonably priced car” access to the venue is very restricted.
Then, if you feel up to it, you get up to six timed laps. Each lap is a standing start and a flying finish. After each lap the instructor will give some tips and pointers on how to improve. Your best lap sets your place on the “Pistonheads Challenge” Leaderboard which will be published on the Gassing Station.
Debrief and review
After the session, back to Plans for a debrief, review of the video, and sum up. The whole process takes just over two hours.
Plans' instructors are all qualified and experienced driver coaches and race car drivers. The tuition is tailored to each individual so, even if you don’t set a time, you’ll be guaranteed to learn a lot from the session, to make you safer on the road as well as more confident on the track.
It should make interesting reading to see which cars are faster than others -- and which PHers are faster than others.
Bookings are available with about two weeks notice. For the immediate future, the sessions are weekdays only due to planning restrictions.
Each session is £189 including VAT

I'll be up for it if I had the cash!! Been around the track in the aforementioned Caterhams when it was peeeing it down
The leader board will be more of a gloating/who's got the most money/best car list.
no it won't, unless you are going to be offended when an Audi TT gets whupped by a 911 GT3 RS. What you could see is whether you beat any other TTs, or what other cars did similar times to yours. Yes it would be nice to be up there at the top - but its no different to F1 - who has the most money and the best car? Put a good driver in and they'll be top. Put someone useless in and the fact they will spin on every corner means the TT would beat them.
I think its a great idea - those with fragile egos need not apply though!
Which would be massively affected by tyres - someone on Pirellis would likely lap quicker than someone on Conti's (for example), and someone on older tyres will find they resist overheating more than someone with new rubber.
Without any sort of 'control', comparative lap-times are, IMHO, pretty pointless as regards anything except pub bragging rights.
This is an idea aimed at anyone who wants to see where they'd come on the TG 'leaderboard', as opposed to people who're interested in proper driver-training.
