3 Peaks Challenge - Adivce
Discussion
Work has just sent round a memo asking if anyone wishes to take part in charity fund raising event - the 3 Peaks Challenge.
I have never done anything like this before but am planning on giving it a go. According to the memo they are planning to do it over 3 days but I have always heard of people doing them all in 24hrs.
So as a reasonably healthy youngish man (30) but with no previous experience in this type of thing do you think it wise to set up a splinter group to attempt to complete them all in24hrs? In doing them all in 24hrs I'm not going to get to see all the scenery and will no doubt half kill myself BUT will have a major sense of achievement at the end. Or do I stick with the masses and take the time, enjoy the experience, scenery etc and do it over the 3 days and still have a sense of achievement at the end but not so great as if I had done it in 24hrs?
Would love to hear from anyone who has already attempted this and any other advice in terms of Kit etc. would be greatly received.
Mods – please move this to appropriate section if required.

If doing the 24hr attempt, make sure you have a dedicated driver, so someone who kips while you are going up the mountains.
Training wise - go for a few long walks in the hills. Perhaps even spend a weekend on each location getting a feel for the routes to save time when doing the attempt.
Ben Nevis is the longest walk and also a LONG way away; Scafell I've done top and back from Wasdale Head in 2 hrs; Snowdon is between the two in length.

Which three peaks challenge are you doing?
I did the one around Malham last summer - Pen-y-Ghent, Ingleborough and Wernside - in just over 12 hours, but they are pretty much next to each other.
Essential equipment - broken-in boots, A medical kit, a decent mountaineering jacket, a change of warm clothes, some chocolate/Kendal mint cake, a mobile phone and as much water as you can carry.

Only problem with the 24 hours is getting between them all and inevitably walking one at night / very very early in the morning. You ever been up one of the / all of them before?
No I have never done any of them before which is part of the reason I want to do them. I would have a separate driver as have heard a few horror stories concerning accidents on the travel in between. I have just been looking on the Red Cross site and there is quite a bit of useful info on there and they recommend that per every team of 5/6 there are 2 support people who take care of driving, food, supplies etc.Twincam16 said:

The mountains are Scarfell Pike , Snowdon and Ben Nevis. Would probably look at doing them in the order of Ben Nevis, Scaffod Pike, Snowdon. I did the one around Malham last summer - Pen-y-Ghent, Ingleborough and Wernside - in just over 12 hours, but they are pretty much next to each other.

Done that a few times. First time vis was so bad that didn't see any of the peaks at any time, couldn't see more than a few metres in any direction so compass work was essential. Under 12 hours is a challenge, the difference between this and the OTHER 3 peaks is that it is 12 hours non-stop. As regards liquid, rather than plain water I would suggest a solution of water, a few tablespoons of sugar, some salt, topped up with squash. Kind of a home-made energy drink. Take lots (I use 3 litre coke bottles) you can always ditch it if you need to.
ESSENTIAL kit to take:
compass (and know how to use it)
map
whistle
torch
appropriate weather gear / decent boots
spare fleece
GOOD kit to have:
dextrose tablets (lots)
chocolate bars
raisins and nut mix
emergency blanket
steel thermos with hot drink
DO NOT take too much kit as you will find it very heavy after a while.
I did it last year for the first time, got lost on Scafell Pike at 0300hrs and finished all 3 in 25.5hrs. Am doing a rerun in June and again in August this year.
Ben Nevis and Snowdon are not too bad navigation wise, Scafell can be tricky near the summit, I'd recommend a recce of at Scafell at least before attempting 3 in under 24hrs.
If you're reasonably fit it achievable, you do need a dedicated driver though prepping hot wets as you come off the hills and allowing you some kip while travelling.
