It's been on an optimate for the last month (getting driven a few times a week) but my 'Porsche' battery has finally given up the ghost. It started first time today but barely turned over when I tried to re-start down the village. Nearly ended up stranded by the bugger!I don't know how old the battery is , but it's just got to go at this stage.

I've made enquires and 'Bosch silver' batteries aren't available here in Dublin. Could folk recommend any other types , giving spec ie A/H's etc.

Sorry if this has been covered already , I've done a search and have only found the Bosch as the recommended one.

Ballcock,

don't they have a Costco there? Costco do the Bosch and as an added bonus it's pretty cheap.

My KwikFit supplied one still going strong after 5 years. I reckon as long as you keep it conditioned then any battery will last a long time.

pretty sure they stock the Bosch batteries

not too sure who makes the Halfords batteries but had one in a previous car and it never caused me a problem smile

How about a Varta Blue Top?

They're meant to be every bit as good as Bosch and if you order from here they're cheaper than an equivalent Halfords job too, I got one for my 944 S2 last week and it arrived next day.

There's a 'search by car' function to make choosing the correct battery easier too.

Varta Blue Top are the same battery as the Bosch Silver. Bosch don't make batteries any more they are made by Varta and branded Bosch:

You need to make sure your window relay isn't faulty. For example, the drivers window shouldn't operate with the door open. If it does, your relay is faulty and will be continually drawing current. Current draw with the alarm on should be around 0.05A. If the window relay is faulty it will be more like 0.5-0.6A.

An ideal battery is as you say the Bosch Silver type 7HN. As you can't get one of these easily, the generic code for the same strength of battery is '096'.

Thanks folks for all your help. Silver , I've checked the window relay , all's good there , I'd say the battery has just reached the end of it's life.

Anyway , crisis has been averted , a friend of mine is driving over from the UK this weekend and he's bringing a Silver with him.

Silver please note the test for the relay is sit in car key out door shut if window operates with no key then relay faulty, the windows will operate with door open key out due to coutesy feature powered by pillar switch.

I put 2 batteries in my 993 over a four year period, firstly a bosch silver ( and the one that replaced was a bosch silver ) lasted only 18 mths , then replaced it with a cheap one from a local motor factor ( motorway ) here in Cork, and this one is better and still going strong.

The Halfords batteries have come up trumps in many an on-line car battery test. I recall the Calcium range beating Bosch Silver a few times too. I've got a calcium Halfords battery in my car and it's a very strong start every time - if you can get away from the bright orange sticker/Halfords 'brand' then it's a very good battery, 4 year guarantee and if it did fail, then it can be swapped at any of the 100's of stores - can't really go wrong IMO.
