having to send new lens back
Discussion
Ouch! I'm guessing here - that was from a lens that was designed for a 35mm format onto an APS-C sized sensor? Some of mine display CA, but then they are lenses designed 15, 20 or even 38 years ago!!!
...and I was discussing this recently. IMHO we probably always had CA at least as bad as this but never really appreciated it on film technology - plus we were'nt always gawping at images down at "grain"/pixel level to see it!
Having said that, if it's a new lens you'll need to establish whether it's a "design feature" or a one-off in the particular example, I guess?

My general purpose 18-200VR does get CA but only really when stuff is out of focus and at the edges, and I accept that because it's a stupid lens.
I'm guessing this is your Canon f2.0, and to be honest getting CA that bad in the middle IN focus is a bit much for a modern lens surely?

From an amateurs POV,what makes this lens so sharp? Is purely down to the quality of the lens ?
can be a few things but one could be the camera setting, dunno what cam or lens he has (not checked for exif) but IS for example gives a crisp image, the sharpness can be how the camera processes the picture. The 5d for example on standard is rather sharp - it can be down to the unsharp style mask used (all do it to some extent)
though the CA can also give a sharp appearnce at times, by sharp, i mean bleeding which can make it look like it has been sharpened.
Poah is it this lens?

Chromatic Aberrations (CAs)
The chromatic aberrations (color shadows at harsh contrast transitions) are exceptionally low with this lens despite a very slight increase towards medium aperture settings.
I guess then your copy is dodgy
