TVR Speed 12 for sale!
Coys again: Brands auction reveals more gems
Just when things calmed down in the PH office following yesterday’s argument over the best car in Coys’ Monte Carlo auction, the catalogue for their next sale landed with a ‘thunk’ on the desk. Oh dear.
It's at Brands Hatch on 27th May, and yes, the quality is equally high for this sale. So if you thought you had your Christmas list sown up after reading yesterday’s story, then today should scramble things for you again. Sorry…
Heading the auction is ‘W112BHG’ the TVR Cerbera Speed 12 described as ‘meticulously restored’. Estimate for this most outrageous of all TVRs is between £130,000 and £160,000. Power? Who knows – 800bhp, 900bhp, name a figure…
From there, are favourites list caused plenty of conflict, but we love the delicate and howling 1967 Porsche 906 that won the European Hill climb Championship of the same year. And of course the 1982 Porsche kremer CK5 Group C car: this rare example of an early car of the class came about as Porsche unveiled the all-conquering 956 but had yet to deliver any customer cars.
Frankly, the spec makes terrifying reading: it uses an alloy space frame chassis developed from 908/936 parentage (we’re guessing there’s not much in the way of frontal impact protection) with an air-cooled twin-turbo 935 engine originally of 2.8 litres but now displacing 3.0 litres. It started life with a four speed 917 transaxle that has since been replaced with a five speed Hewland item, and it uses a mix of 935 and 917 suspension. This loveable and distinctive mongrel is the first chassis made and enjoyed an active Group C competition life from 1982 to 1985, albeit without seeing which way a 956 went. You’ll need between £135,000 and £170,000 to scare yourself silly with this…
Mustn’t forget either the Dino 246 in competition trim, with straight cut ‘box, slippy diff, AP brakes, and Perspex windows by Garage Franconchamps. Oh, and the Lola T70, the 930 Turbo Group B, and on, and on…
A small selection of what we rate is shown below, or log onto their website for the full listing of lots.

This is what Coys have to say about it...
"This homage to the original was specially commissioned from K.D. Motor Engineers of Warrington and this unique road-going 917K Replica is rumoured to have cost well in excess of six figures. It is based on a mid-engined 1970 914-6 donor car, 'ARP 496J' and is both registered and taxed as a Porsche. It is completely road legal and has a current MoT until July 2007 and has covered just 11,618 miles!
Fed by twin variable-boost GT2 turbochargers, its dry-sump 3.3 litre type 930 flat-six engine also boasts a fully plumbed-in 'wet' nitrous-oxide injection system. Topped by dual intercoolers and a horizontal multi-blade fan, this formidable powerplant is coupled to an inverted manual 911 Turbo gearbox complete with its own oil cooler and oil pump. Intended for both fast road and track use, 'ARP 496J' features highly modified suspension and 911 Turbo sourced disc brakes. Reportedly handmade from blueprints, its lightweight fibreglass bodywork is finished in Gulf Oil's evocative light blue and orange team colours. Sparse but functional, the replica's cabin sports high-backed seats, a centre-mounted instrument binnacle, Camus LCD display screen (a camera shows behind the car with screen in-cabin), in cabin intercom system for communication between driver and passenger, fire-extinguisher pull, ignition cut-out switch and starter button. A truly unique proposition, this incredible left-hand drive Porsche supercar is worthy of the closest inspection as it has some wonderful additions: the tailfin was signed at Brands Hatch in 2006 by Richard Chamberlain, Mark Finsburg, David Piper and Richard Attwood and the seat belts are from the 1996 Championship Williams driven by Damon Hill (with provenance). If you could find an original, the price would start at approx £1,250,000 and go up from there depending on the history! Go on; stand out from the crowd..."

A replica, but quite a special one then.
