VW Passat 1.9 Tdi 130bhp v 2.5 V6 Tdi
Discussion
Hey all
Circumstances mean a change of car and back to a diesel.
I'm looking at a VW passat with either of the above engines. I've owned Mk4 Golfs with the 1.9 engine so i'm familiar with it, but i'm really curious to know more about the 2.5 V6.
Anyone have any experience with this engine or can give me any feedback on either please?
I'm aware the V6 will cost a little more to insure, tax and fuel but it generally has a little more kit and can offer the smooth waftyness i'm after - daily drive is motorway and dual carriageway. But is it any more reliable? and does it have the same acceleration that the PD 1.9 unit has?
I know i need to test drive the V6 version, but any advice would be great.
Cheers!

I had an Audi 2.5tdi (180) sport quattro auto on a 52 plate. I took it from 36k to 147k. It wasn't a 'fast' car but was good in the mid range. MPG with the auto was 32-35. In terms of reliability, the key is to change the oil every 10k and cam belt every 80k. The later is a dog because they have to take the front of the car off to do it. Cost about £450 with an independent. The other thing to watch is the injectors. There are 3 of them and they cost £300 each to replace!!
I haven't driven the 1.9 but a couple of people who test drove my 2.5 had and said the 2.5 had a lot more grunt.

I have the 2.5 TDI inmy car and it is a very smooth engine, I love it.
Nothing went wrong and it has 120k on the clock MPG about 40 when cruising atb 70mph on motorway 39ish when driving abit faster.
If you find a Passat V6 TDI it will have most of the toys on it. My uncle has one.

2.5 is smoother more refined and quite a bit more torquie than 1.9.
But its still very old technology so nothing like as smooth as a modern diesel engine.
However 1.9 TDI do seem to be pretty much bullet proof. Might want a turbo at some stage other than that nothing expensive ever goes wrong on them.
2.5TDIs on the other hand, Turbo's £1200, pumps £1000, oil leaks £300, crankcase breather valves £350 and the camshafts are made of chocolate. If the cams wear to the point that they fail, they wipe out the rockers and smashup the head. £3000+ In some cases resulting in a new engine required £5500-£7000, although replacement of the head usually suffices.
A 2.5tdi when its working is a nicer engine than a 1.9, and most 2.5 will be higher spec cars. But with engine over 100k on them my professional opinion is live with the harshness and get a 1.9.

That's really good info, many thanks. But its still very old technology so nothing like as smooth as a modern diesel engine.
