Since the recent demise of my E220 Coupe I've been pootling round in a 400 quid ebay special Mazda 323.
It's just about sucked every trace of vehicular soul from my being but it has allowed me to contemplate alternatives to my original plan of getting another Merc and also put a few extra beer tokens aside and I now have a budget of approx 2.5k

Anyone have any experience of these or pointers to what to look for or indeed any other suggestions?

As for fuel consupmtion, very little man maths is required as my commute to work is only 3 miles each way smile

Thanks all

Right then, a few threads on these but here are the basics:

The engines on these are fine. They go like stink.
A 3 mile commute is 20mpg give or take.

The auto box is a bit pants, stick with a manual.

The transfer box for the AWD is a known weak point. If it rumbles and whines or leaks it needs doing. Budget the thick end of £1000.
The prop is also known to have the centre bearing fail and it's a new prop job. Another few hundred. I had both jobs done on mine in one go.

They only rust under the sill covers and this can be easily missed so get under it and poke about properly.

All cars wear up suspension and steering components. The parts are relatively cheap for the Jag (Ford).

Service parts are dead cheap too, I ran an E34 540 before...

Handling is not sharp on my se but the Sport is slightly stiffer and usually on 17s or 18s.

On a run it will give mid 30s at normal speeds (limits), high 30s to even 40 if driving miss daisy. A certain other PHer gets considerably less!

Get as many toys as you can, cruise, electric leather etc.

Over all I'm very pleased with mine after 2 years (it's got 72k on it, 02-plate). It's quick, comfy, big boot and sounds great with stainless pipes smile

£2.5k is plenty to get a good one if you do a bit of leg work. I've seen them go for less on eBay.

A cheap se with only the final digit of the reg different from mine!

^what he said.

Ran my 3.0 SE manual for 5 years and it was a great car. The permanent AWD has a 60% rear wheel bias and is great in the snow.

The SE spec has more toys than Sport spec in general. Sports tend not to come with cruise and parking sensors for example. Sport suspension is only 15% stiffer than SE so not a huge amount in it.

The 3.0 Manual V6 does 0-60 in 6.58 secs which never gets boring, especially as some hot-hatch drivers think you are driving your grandads car!

I have a 3 litre SE. It's a very good car - i agree that the auto box can sometimes feel a little bit lazy but that doesn't bother me tbh.

The engine pulls like a train, sounds good - the previous owner of mine fitted a large bore exhaust which sounds even better than normal, it is well equipped & gives a very comfortable ride.

Fuel economy doesn't other me - if it did I would have bought a Nissan Micra!

Handling is good - even better since I swapped the 19's that were fitted to mine (still for sale if anyone is interested) for a set of 17's.

Would I buy another one? No. For the simple reason that my next car will be an XJR Sport.

For £2k you should be able to pick up a very good car. I don't think you will be disappointed.

Also, it's not just a Mondeo, before anyone says anything. My dad had one of these on test back in 2002 for his company scheme. He chose the Saab 9-3... I always wanted him to get the Jaguar.

I like X Types a lot more than I thought I would. I was half expecting the clarkson 'Mondeo in a posh frock' thing to ring true but it doesn't, they really are quite nice cars. I do have to say though that I've only driven the V6s with an automatic and despite me usually not minding an auto I did find that it makes the car feel pretty lethargic.

Do have a look underneath for leaks though. The top hose assembly seems to spring leaks at certain points pretty commonly. Also a leaky sump will mean the pan gasket has gone which'll require the transfer box to be removed in order to replace it which is a fairly large job.

Does the autobox have any significant bork potential / something major which could go wrong?

It is not a Mondeo at all - it is a thoroughbred classic sleek sporty likely-to-increase-in-value Jag like all their other models.

Slightly O/T: Does anyone know where I can have my Aston re-mapped? Need to tweak it a bit. Maybe I can get it up to 150BHP?

Same here. I love my Jaguar & I get quite pissed off with the 'it's a Mondeo' comments that constantly crop up. It isn't a Ford it's a Jaguar!!

Grrrrr.

It is a very good car & I am happy with it.
