New Version of the Speed Six engine

I've just had my cams changed as they appear to be showing a little pitting on the top of the lobes. They were only a year old. What causes this?
I believe, poor quality surface treatment of the lobes. For a more experienced engineering answer, ask Dave at Autocraft as a lot of his business is rebuilding S6's (each one just once, before a smart alec pipes up!)
Didn't have chance to say hello at B of Sixes, so
now. apache said:

Sorry I thought I was on the Speed Six Engine forum - silly me!
Yes you are, but the thread is about the mk2 not trashing the mk1. Sorry if I come across rude its just that comments like yours cause arguments and are rather tedius as its all been done..If you drove a sp6 Jay your views would be dramatically different.

In this case does it not at a stroke condemn the Mark 1 Speed Six and the after-market firms rectifying them to the history books?
Lets see this Mk2 engine first. As for these after-market firms "rectifying" the SP6 - some of them like TVRCraft are going well beyond that, with successful supercharging options....something TVR never managed. They replaced my engine - I say that rather than rebuilt - and it's now what the Tuscan should always have been. The only problem being it would probably have cost £50-60k new with these components. You get what you pay for I suppose. There will always be a market for engineering firms and tuners whatever the make of car. They exist not as a fixit shop for TVR but to push the engineering to it's maximum potential.
The SP6 is a glorious engine when constructed with quality components and fed adequately with oil.

It's a pity that so many Speed 6 owners are still like swimming Egyptians.
Surely a new improved Speed Six designed by Ricardo would rejuventate the Speed Six engined TVRs and should be welcomed and encouraged.
For something to be welcomed and encouraged, it has to exist first. And as more than just a concept.Surely a new improved Speed Six designed by Ricardo would rejuventate the Speed Six engined TVRs and should be welcomed and encouraged.

Secondly the Ricardo engine would have to be produced to a cost which allows the cars to exist in the 45-55k market.
No tuner/manufacturer has been able to do this. Better components cost more money. That's a fact of life.
I don't have my head in the sand at all. It was only foresight that led me to have a TVRCraft engine installed before TVR went tits up.
It was an expensive solution, but a good solution nonetheless. I only paid 18k (SH) for my car so it worked for me. Also I bought 2000 car so it was a timebomb - the later ones are supposed to be better, but there's still cases of Sagaris's with bottom and top ends going.
If Ricardo produce a 360+bhp SP6 engine at similar cost to the existing unit (+5k or so) then I'll welcome that.
Until then the aftermarket companies like Craft, Austec, Power are the best option SP6 owners have of enjoying their cars.

The Superclutch unit which was not fit for purpose, contrary to what they told Dave at Craft, is being replaced with a Tilton unit as I type. This has caused a big delay in getting the car upto Joolz. I want to know as much as you do what the improvement are, if any!
All I know is that Graham's car before they fitted the supercharger and without re-map etc put out 378bhp (I believe) on the rollers at Craft. This was a near identical spec car to mine (bar the billet crank) before the s/c was fitted.
So with a little tinkering from Joolz, I'm hoping/guessing for somewhere between 390-410bhp.
I'll be happy with anywhere close to that though. As soon as I have the figures I'll post the graphs. I know Joolz is v.busy at the moment, and my wedding is fast approaching, but hopefully I'll get the car up there before July.
The superclutch seal failures have been a real let down for Craft. It's affected 7 cars. But what can you do when a supplier says the component will do the job easily and then it proves not to be the case? Apart from the obvious

Sorry to hear you're having problems Al, but you ask a very relevant question. The answer in part is that the builder finishes up with a bad reputation, not the component supplier if it happens to frequently. Thats not a cheap shot at Craft. If you're generous to TVR, you could say they have been the victim of this to a degree.
If you're less than generous, you suggest they specified equipment that was not fit for purpose, or engineered to an unrealsitic price.
That aside I look forward to your results.
Maybe I should also declare my interest. I am lurking because I need to upgrade my fit 4.0S engine, but still cant get to grips with Craft's prices even after considration of the quality parts they use.I cannot write them off however as I am still to see any power results in terms of before and after. The increase in build quality I accept should lead to longevity, I need the numbers to judge the value - having had no engine failures thus far (touches head).

I agree. Craft have actually done everything they can to put the problem right and at their expense which shows a lot of integrity and self-belief in what they are trying to do. Maybe superclutch will do the right thing and offer them some sort of financial compensation, but that's a difficult area for small companies to get into. Craft are out of pocket and superclutch now know that their unit isn't as strong in certain areas as they believed. Hopefully a refund is in order without much fuss.As for the bhp figures, I would want the information you do in your situation so will provide it as soon as possible.
All the best

I am indeed aware, hence the lurking and no spending.

Sorry its not for me to say, but lets say it may be worth while keeping your bangers and mash in your wallet at the momment Chris

Engineering reputation is one thing, but will it convince customers that they've built a sorted Sp6. Unless of course it's already secretly in a car out there racking up the test miles - which would be a great thing to do

- rather than let the customers trial the engine. However if there was a cheap, simple fix, do you not think that one of Craft, Austec or Power would have discovered it?

There's not the economies of scale to buy the parts in, in large numbers and reduce costs, because there's only a trickle of owners willing to take the plunge and upgrade the engines.
Better quality, balanced components. Adequate lubrication. Reduced stress and wear. What else have all the above tuners missed?
