Perhaps we need a system that only allows free adverts from established and active PHer's.
Ration us to a couple of car adverts a year and such advertisers must have been regularly posting.
At the very minimum, a way of marking adverts as from such people.
I would prefer to buy only from fellow enthusiasts that have loved their car than some masquerading Arthur Daily.

thats the way to go, a minimum 50 or 100 posts before you can even place an ad, will stop people abusing the systemRation us to a couple of car adverts a year and such advertisers must have been regularly posting.

I know that hondatech-uk have a similair type of policy where you need something like 50 posts before you can sell an item.
I'm sure the mods here on PH would be able to implement this idea.
By that reasoning, Razo, you (a member of 9 months) would not be able to advertise a car with us with only 44 posts?
I think that would be the end of the classifieds if that were to happen. Period.
I once joined a Peugeot 205 site because I wanted to buy a rally car (1.9 gti). But you weren't allowed to view the classifieds until you were an established member. I wrote to the owners explaining that I wanted to BECOME an established memebr, but needed the car to do it (a bit of an oxymoron really). So they allowed me to view.
The point I'm making is that it will alienate people from using the classifieds and would be an instant, instant downfall.
Technically it would be very easy, but the question is not that; would it want to be done? My uneducated opinion would be never in a million years.

I say leave it open when I look at adds the first thing I look for is to see if they are registered and have a look at the kinds of things they have posted about.
Can tell you a lot about how they care for cars and is what makes the pistonheads adds so good.
Anyone not registered is of much less interest to me.

The problem is adverts placed by fraudsters.
It is possible impliment a computer check for repeated use of the same phone number. Likewise for numbers beginning with an overseas dialing code. These should be flaged for a Mods attention as a minimum.
Restricting ads to people that have been PH posters would stop people registering just to sell for free. PH was set up as an on line community for like minded people who actively participated, and the free ads as a service for them. Not for those who wish to scam others or are not community members who can use paid adverts.
Any minimum number of posts requirement would present the problem of people making a number of rubbish posts just to qualify. How could the Mods decided between the rubbish I normally post and the rubbish of a scam artist

Fester
I agree that registered PH members only would be a good first step and probably put most scammers off.
If it didn't make much of a difference then introduce the minimum post count.
Sound a good idea?
After all, why should people who are not participating members of the PH community benefit from free adverts?
Personally, I think it will kill the classifieds if a charge is made across the board to all advertisers regardless of their PH membership.

I see your point mate, especially when you pointed out my post count I think that would be the end of the classifieds if that were to happen. Period.

I guess the best thing would be to report scammers as much as we can really, hopefully they'll get the hint.
How about just a simple line underneath the mileage/price at the start of the "details" of an advert that states the sellers online name (and if they are a member of PH this can be the username which is hyperlinked to the database). If that was in place, a prospective purchaser could easily click on that and view their posting history/PH longevity etc?
Or is that too hard to implement - I make no claims to programming intellect!!
