Used to do some work for the immigrations offices round those parts.

I am normally fairly optimistic, but there is nothing I can say that is good about that place.

No wait, there is, it is in good proximity to the M4 so you can leave relativly quickly...

If I had to make a choice between opnly Slough and Hounslow - I would take Slough without even thinking about it.

Yeah - but you'd prefix your choice with... "well fk it, in that case it'll have to be..."

I might have a job based in Hounslow soon, was wondering what it was like? I currently live in Hertfordshire so I'm guessing it will be more expensive in Hounslow. I've also heard its quite dodgy?
I used to work at Hounslow Police Station..... I wouldn't live there, it's not a nice area.

There is a good rock club there though, and an M&S outlet store. That's about the only two reasonable things I can think of....

Twickenham is close to commute from easily by bus (short journey) and nice for that local area - bit expensive though.

It's alright, I'm from there.

Although you do need to consider which part of Hounslow, I live near the Isleworth/Twickenham borders and tbh my area is alright. However on the flipside I wouldn't want to live in the areas around the Hounslow Central/West or East stations.

On the positive side, the area does have good schools although conversely they are heavily oversubscribed. The Heathland School is very good, and if you want a single sex school for girls then the Green School is also pretty good.

Also if you like Indian food then there are loads of shops for you to get decent supplies from, and there are quite a few decent Indian restaurants in the area too. Not to mention some cracking takeaways such as the Flaming Grill or Rockys!

On the negative side, the High St isn't great and the area is a little rough, but not enough to put me off living there. The only reason I'd move is because I want to move out of such an urban area, but I haven't a problem living there for a few more years yet. If you are working and commuting in then I really wouldn't worry about it too much.

Also if you really don't want to live in the area then there are some very nice areas within driving distance, although they are expensive. The likes of Richmond, Wimbledon and some parts of Kingston, Teddington, Twickenham etc are all quite nice although are priced to match.

it can be rough
but if you have some hair on your chest u'll be fine.
most the local roughians are young 16-18 and need to be home by 7pm anyway else parents beaten them, as the library they allegedly went to after school is now closed.
dont be a wimp, think about your career and if hounslow is bad then 80% of london is also out of bounds.

Get out your comfort zone, and dont be a pus*y.

plus points are transport, relatively cheap, food and viberant. Gain some street cred by saying your from hounslow with out actually having any!
negatives STAY away from the Hanworth/feltham areas!! you have been warned.

Thanks for all the replies, sounds like Hounslow is pretty much how I thought it would be. At least I like curry and have a thing for Polish girls.

Got through to the next stage in my application today and have an interview on Tuesday. I want the job enough to put up with living in a sthole for a while until I can afford somewhere nicer, fingers crossed. smile

Have you seen that other thread about training cats to use the toilet?

Well cats in Hounslow can't fail to crap in a toilet unless they unwittingly stray beyond the boundaries of the borough.
LOL took me a minute to get that.

p.s. thanks again the phone is working a dream, got me out of a hole there, how is the bump ?
You're welcome! smile

The bump came out 5 weeks early at 8lb 3oz, and is now called Nathan! biggrin

I work in Hounslow town centre- it makes Slough look sophisticated.

There are a lot a 99p shops on the High Street, an M+S "outlet" shop , takeaways and some rough pubs - one of which does actually have a really good Thai restaurant at the back - which is the only good thing I have found in Hounslow so far.

I used to live in Hounslow, but my parents moved out in the early 60's when I was a baby!. But I do go back sometimes to visit elderly relatives, is not that bad. There are some very nice people there, have an open mind..

Probably a good point Mick!

Hobes, don't worry it really isn't as bad as some people have made out. I have certainly been to rougher places, very rarely get any trouble in Hounslow that I can't handle.

You're right - when attending my first interview I got lost and ended up asking someone in the car next to me at a set of lights if he knew where the road was and he told me to follow him and he lead me there thumbup

Thanks mate - I think Luton looks worse to be honest! :P

As to where I will move to it's definitely between Hounslow and Isleworth at the moment, all depends whats available on the day.

The roads by Osterley Park are good as well. Esp if its near Osterley Station, then it could be a good long term bet. IIRC there is a new development behind the high street by the car park, but that depends if you want to live so close to there. Isleworth is also is good place as a bit more diffuse in makeup/type of people.

If you want a good idea of what its truely like, you can't go wrong with watching Bend it like Beckham as it was filmed mostly in that area!

Be warned that most houses have been given the Grand Designs:Indian Look style! (I can say this as my parents are very guilty of this!) That usually means paved driveway, house has been extended to the hilt inc loft extensions and conservatories, obligatory home bar ala Del Boy style in the front room, uPVC windows with leaded detailing, dark busy carpet so that stains don't show up, 2 receptions rooms: one for everyday, one for the guests that come once in a blue moon, Sky TV with the channel stuck on the indian channels, and I could go on....!

As for food, some good places if you like indian/tandoori food. theres a trend where indians have bought pubs, so its a good place to catch sport and some tandoori chicken/kebabs with a half decent pint on the weekends!

I used to work there a while ago and its not that bad! It could be worse!

Jersey Road/Thornbury Road? Pretty good advice to be honest.

Hounslow is a sthole, I have lived on the border for 24 years and I can honestly say that I don't enjoy a single minute in Hounslow. For those who are going to call me a wimp, I challenge you to have braved Hounslow Manor School for education! wink

Anyway, if you can avoid the high street and general lowlife it's not all bad. There is a great little curry place opposite the old BMX track a couple of nice pubs around the Old Isleworth area.

If you fancy meeting up and going out with the Thames Valley crew then feel free to follow/tag along with me Hobes.
