5. Citreon Xsara Picasso - had a little piece of metal on the clutch pedal that would catch my foot everytime I changed gear.

4. Landrover Freelander - comedy handling, unsupportive (slide) seats, and no brakes.

3. Nissan Micra 1.0 - plastic fantastic, it even had reversing sensors for reasons unknown to man (I could touch the back from the drivers seat)

2. Original Mini - sorry mini lovers, but wow, really bad, cramped and generally unsafe.

1. FSO (I dont know what) - drum brakes all round and a floor I could see through, nice...

Has to be my mates 1.5 106 diesel. Was shocking, slowest thing ever! Even my 1.1 106 was faster than that! Gears were way smoother than my crunchy petrol version though.

Aston Martin V8 Vantage Auto/Tip - Worst Gearbox ever.

Land Rover Defender - How people spend £30k on a new one in 2008 God knows.

Nissan Almera Tino - Not one good thing to say.

Mini Cooper Mk1 - My 6ft4 frame didn't agree with it one bit.

New Corsa 1.2

5. Any kind of people carrier only driven a picasso and mazda 5 (not by choice), A transit goes and handles better!
4. 98 plate passat and mk4 golf diesel, wallowy understeering dull boxes
3. new 308 1.6, gutless, huge on the outside, tiny on the inside. An inverted tardis
2. any nissan micra
1. A ford Ka, what a horrible engine. Had a proper mini at the time, and the mini was more fun, had more space in it and was generally better in every way.

And to cap it all off the indicator stalks were on the wrong side.

It's the only car i HATE with a passion.
I think you'll find that's the correct side and all others are on the wrong side, if it used Japanese switchgear.

1.) 1993 Volvo 740SE 2L petrol - I owned this car, bought for £90, manual box was like an approximation when selecting gears. Handled like a boat, went like a tank.
2.) Citroen Xantia - woeful in everyway, suspension and steering too light.
3.) 1990 Maestro Clubman 1.3L petrol - manual choke, yuk in every way, but had free petrol in it.

that's about all I can think of right now.

Looks like it's impossible to make cheap enough dampers for this vehicle segment. Ford is a laudable exception to the rule - their chassis tuning expertise is impressive - while Volkswagen generally dows a good job from the Golf upwards (shame about the balance, though)
You're probably on to something there. It's probably as simple as Ford and VW putting more stock into ride and handling than the other manufacturers and adding more budget to parts
It's true, a Fiesta Zetec eats a Polo for breakfast in that dept

1.) Vauxhall Nova with a 2.0 turbo. Undriveable, scary, uncofortable and no traction. fast when moving and in a straight line, but ste. Sorry Tim! it was my mates car.
2.) Vauxhall astra Estate (last shape - you know the boring looking one) - driven from Teeside to Peterboro and back. Most uncomfortable journey ever! And I got lost! That was the cars fault too! frown
3.) Austin Metro. What more can you say.
4.) Rover 214 SEI. The worst handling car I ever owned or driven. bought for cheapness.. and the head blew!
5.) My Escort 1.4 3 door ste mobile. Total 1995 stedness! It's not up the top because I knew how crap it was before I bought it so that doesn't count as much!! smile

Having worked in garages most of my life this is actually very difficult but here goes.

1. Fso polenaz, absolutly horrid no relation between controls & what the car was doing oversteer at 5mph.
2. Nova 2.0 16v in the early days of this conversion & still had standard sr suspension & brakes. Very quick but didnt stop or go round corners, broke down every day. (yes it was mine)
3. Saab 900 convertible anyone who has driven one will understand feels like the chassis is gonna break in half every time you hit a bump.
4. Ferrari 308gtb looked great total disappointment to drive.
5. Vw beetle the originial & worst.

There are lots more but i think these are the ones that stick in my mind the most.

I'm sorry are we talking about the same car? The Mk5 was a god awful car with plastics so cheap they make 99p kids toys feel like they were built by BMW! The handling was dire the looks were dire the seats were so uncomfortable taking the bus seemed the luxury option! The Mk6 was ste undoubtedly but not quite as bad as the mk5! IMHO!

Not sure I've been unlucky enough to drive the full 5 but here's some stinkers,

3rd place: Ford Escort - so gutless it stalled if you applied full lock with the air-conditioning switched on.
2nd place: Datsun 120Y - utterly, utterly appalling.
1st place: Hyundai Elantra - was it a car at all?

Ford Escort Van X2 (non turbos) so slow!
nissan micra 1990 (doesnt drive like any car ive ever driven)
Rover 800 (boring, was the parents car)
fiat florino (low mileage van that was a PITA to get in to first and a slight dab of the brakes is enough to give you whiplash)
renault clio campus (like mine but slower, softer ride, soft unsupportive seats and the air con uses so much fuel)

Dodge Viper SRT-10 - from a rental place on Las Vegas strip. Biggest dog ever, obviously written off and re-built on the lowest budget possible numerous times after a succession of crashes. Whole thing shook, veered side to side under acceleration!

Still, got loads of attention, with admiring glances in petrol stations, students in cars asking me if it's okay to follow me (the opposite direction to which they were going!) so they can look at the car!

BE-WARNED: Don't expect a 'Dream Drive' from a one day exotic car rental location, the cars will look georgeos, but likely be tarted up trash that would more likely scare you away from the brand!

As a 'New' car, worst ever driven would probably be PT Cruiser - good 'ol Alamo rent a car, reserve a Mustang, get a PT Cruiser rage
