Le mans 24 vs Classic 24

The competition cars returning to the pits via the back road into the paddock was a sight and experience to behold, but the written off Ferrari 250LM was heart rendering.
I don't think you can write off a Ferraris 250 LM at all! The value is far higher than the repair value. I was there at Indianapolis (on the inside with the marshals) when it happened Sunday and sadly the dust cloud was so great that it was impossible for the camera to focus and get a picture. However, he bounced off the tyres and carried on and came out of the dust cloud 200 yds further while I was trying to focus on what I though was a wrecked car. He certainly went round Arnage at a great rate of knots anyway so while the body must have been bent the mechanics weren't too bad it seems. Here is the photo of where he hit and it is surreal - it looks like the outline of a car, headlamp and all!
Ref Busby's mention of the 250 LM crash, we got a really good look at it on the transporter taking it back to the paddock. It was a terrible sight to see such a terrific piece of history in such a state; Absolutely mangled, big time, front, back and near-side, and all, very bad. Even allowing for it's huge value, repair costs are going to represent a huge investment. Any other vehicle would deffo be a complete write off.

Hi,I was stood on top of the Kart circuit garages when this Ferrari crashed, I think the guy he was overtaking ran a bit wide and nudged the Ferrari, it did a 180 and hit the wall backwards and spun back into the wall, the driver looked a bit startled when he got out, he seemed to age a bit as he surveyed the damage.

I refuse to attend this event again before at least 2010!!
The Classic is a terrific British race event which just happens to be held in France. I knew I was going to have a great time when I drove off the ferry at St Malo and saw an AC Cobra with two huge hairy Brit blokes in it: they were both dressed as nuns.
Whoever THEY were - thanks for a great memory!

... getting three large adults in the front of a Ferrari 348 to save the walk back to KN gave the gate marshals a bit of a laugh too

I think I achived a World TVR record on getting back, with 2 tents, 2 chairs and all the other camping stuff, not forgetting the TVR roof in the boot, son and I in car collected Harry the Weimeraner from kennels on the way back! That got some strange looks too!

Interesting this - we aren't talking about the same Ferrari nor the same accident! The one you saw was further round the circuit whereas the one I referred to was the "breadvan" and happened at Indianapolis. My friend eric was photographing the Bizzarinis and this flashed across his lens before the impact I showed earlier.

One request for the organisers next time.....
turn the damn floodlights off not only do they give me a headache but they ruin the spectacle of cars racing in the dark...a major attraction of Le mans for me in the past.
I went to the Porsche curves in the run up to Midnight and if you went right to the far end of the bank then you could see the cars coming along from Arnage in the dark before turning into the lights at the bends.turn the damn floodlights off not only do they give me a headache but they ruin the spectacle of cars racing in the dark...a major attraction of Le mans for me in the past.
Later I watched the catagory 2 race from the bank halfway between the Dunlop Bridge and Tetre Rouge, half a mile of track filled with cars from the 50's at full welly just after the rolling start, so cool.
We stayed at Beauséjour campsite and though not as close to the main centre as the others, it was far quieter (and therefore better for the wife). We were camped near a trio of 3 wheel morgans with tepees and the Porche 356 owners club. The wife now wants a Porsche 356.

I too saw the sorry remains of the 250LM as it arrived on a truck back in the paddock. I hope that it is rebuilt, surely such a historic car has to be? I was at Indianapolis as the Breadvan flew across the kittylitter into the tyrewall. Seemed to a glancing blow but it didn't reappear again. Anyone know what extent of damage there was?Hi all that were at le Mans Classic

The other thing you dont get at the 24 is the Little Big Mans, which I thought was outstandingly good value, particularly the two false starts and the little person in the Bugatti replica who refused to take any further part in the proceedings after being spooked by the track and crowds. Even when its parents got it back into the car he/she turned the wheels resolutely back towards the pits...

And how cool was this??!!!

Well I know what I will say will upset a few but it's tough it's a fact.
I have been to a few CLM's and I was worried this year it could be the last. The event this year I followed on forums for more modern cars for 18months prior to the event and I thought Oh no we are going to get the beer swilling, chavs taking over the pure event.
I have to say there was some of that but not as much as I thought thank god. I think 2010 event will be still a worry but I hope on the whole the real classic buffs will still just out number them. We had a group of Le Mans people ( lads next to us ) and they were ok even offered us classic's a breakfast once. They drank lots but where enjoying the event and the cars and had alot of respect for other peoples pride and joy. So I long hope this sort of people enjoy the classic and the chav's stay away.
If the Chav's come and ruin the event then it will change for ever why would you want to bring a car you have taken 10 years to rebuild with your spare cash to have some plonker take the piss or damage it. I think to be fair if some idiot came to damage one of the classic's in a group I wouldn't want to be that person because I think they wouldn't be walking back to their tent.
Long live the true classic goers and welcome to the new ones who want to join in as a classic buff.
The event it's self had some issues. I feel we are getting further away from the action. I noticed that the grand stand we could all use last time was out of bounds to us mere mortals and was for corporate people not very happy about that esp as it was only at best 10% full!!!!!!!
The fact they said this year you can't take a small fold up bike to trunndle round the event ( I was recovering from Flu and I was shattered for walking so far ) as last year you could and as soon as you were in the event you where run over by pit crew on motorbikes and bikes!!!! I just wanted to get the bike in the middle ish leave with a mate in the paddock with his race car then I knew I could ride back with out feeling too shattered..
Just tickets for conning me and others in to grandstand seats " Oh yes they are oposite the start stop line " what a lie!!! I gave up walking so bloody far as I got to the Dunlop stand I still was not in the right place and anyway it's now where near the bloody start stop line!!! I will not use JUST TICKETS again... letter on way to him.
The track laps where good but I think the driving standard of others ( I have to say this year was the bloody French!!! I have the proof on video apart from one TVR GB driver who also needs a slap ( modern car again!! ) ) Was poor with people taking racing lines when two cars in front where already taking the corner, No Mr 911 SC and Mr Lotus ( french ) you can't make 3 cars into a space for two even if you are going 25mph faster than the cars IN FRONT OF YOU!!!!! t
ts. I think I might load up the video of these 3-4 idiots for all to see..my mate filming was not amused...
anyway rant over, good event good to see so many people jolly and happy, great cars and a great drive down there and back.....
I just hope Halfords have a sale on for the next classic Le Mans weekend so the chavs feel they have to stay behind..

I dont think that this event will ever get taken over by the Chavs as they will be instantly put off bu the word 'Classic'. That will conjur up images of weirdy beards with dirty fingernails talking about sprockets and such like.
A group of 'Engurland' lads turned up near us on the Friday, all wearing Arsenal or England shirts. First thing to go up was a big English flag. To be honest they looked like the Hitler Youth but were good as gold all weekend. Goes to show you cant judge a book by its cover.
I think this event will stay Chav free.
As for the driving on track on the parade laps what did you expect? If you get that many enthusiasts driving around possibly the most famous race circuit in the world in their own cars its enevitable some of them will start to think they are Steve McQueen and give it some beans. If I'd paid £80 for 2 laps I'd have put my foot down a bit as well.

Generally agreed! My prize for biggest track lap idiots were 2 Maseratis (both on Dutch plates) who muscled their way at suicidal speeds down the middle of a busy two lane track, but top prize to a Frenchman in a crappy old black Porsche who pushed his way forward down the centre of a two-lane queue after we had all left the track and were doing a 5mph filter back on to the Bugatti track. Like you I have all this on video...
