Pistenklause/Am Tiertgarten £50 per night, Ferry with Norfolk Lines about £50 return. £200 all in for 3 nights, £150 if you just make it a 2 nighter. Jobs a goodun.
More like £250 ferry for me, i'll be doing Rosyth to Zeebrugge.

My thoughts were meet in France/Belgium, head to Nurburgring for evening. Get into the hotel, get pissed, up in the morning, a day of fun and games round the 'ring, back to the hotel, get pissed, head off to the alps for a couple of days, then back to the ring for 1 more day, hotel, pissed, then home the next day. 5-7 day trip/ That sound interesting to anybody?
that does sound good to me, as that is pretty much what i had in mind, but it really does depend on the dates. somebody mentioned March, i'd prefer later in the spring May/April avoiding bank holidays and school holidays. But I guess we go with wichever has the biggest vote.

Alright, having done a bit of digging, it would appear the best time to go would be end of April/beginning of May, as the weather in March could be questionable, and the Easter Holidays don't finish until near the end of April.

So, i propose

Leaving date Sunday 27th April

Meet in France/Belgium/Germany, as i'm sure some people will be coming from different directions. Bit of a convoy to hotels in the region of the Nurburgring. Few beers, then bed.

Monday 28th April

Early start, those wishing to drive the 'ring can either book tickets in advance, or on the day. Day wil be spent hooning round the 'ring until they throw us off or we all break down biggrin

Tuesday 29th April

Head off to the Alps, find some great driving roads and enjoy. Hotel, get pissed

Wednesday 30th April

As above smile

Thursday 1st May

Morning can be spent hooning the last of the Alps, or spent attempting some top speed runs on the Autobahn smile Back at hotels in the vicinity of the 'ring, few beers, bed.

Friday 2nd May

Up sharpish, morning having a few more laps of the 'ring, then convoy back to various ferry terminals.

I'm only suggesting these dates as the ferry from Rosyth only runs once every 2 days, and these dates fit in with it all, plus it all fits in a week.
We can move the dates about to try and get the best fit with everybody. I can't find the opening times for the 'ring for next year, as this will also have a bearing on when we would want to go.
Also, as this isn't an organised trip, everybody will have to book their own hotels/ferry crossings, however if we can agree on dates then we could block book rooms at hotels etc.

If this appeals to anybody then stick your name on the list

The 2008 times will most likely be available from around the end of February. The provisional times sometimes posted at the beginning of Jan are very subject to change and I do NOT recommend using them to plan a trip!
I'm up for part of the trip anyway (the ring bit at least)

Going by those times, the dates i've proposed will mean no 'ring time due to it being closed to the public.

Monday 28th 17.15 to 19.30
Tuesday 29th 17.15 to 19.30
Wednesday 30th 08.00 to 19.30
Thursday 1st 17.45 to 19.30
Friday 2nd Closed to Public

The week after is just as bad, and the week before is catching the end of the school holidays (i think they go back on either the 21st or the 28th)

Any suggestions? Can change the calendaer round to suit i suppose?

looking at that, all the long opening days are on a weekend, so to get the most ring time we would have to stagger a saturday and sunday.

Friday, 16.05.08 17:15 until 19:30 h
Saturday, 17.05.08 13:00 until 19:30 h
Sunday, 18.05.08 08:00 until 19:30 h
Monday, 19.05.08 17:15 until 19:30 h
Tuesday, 27.05.08 17:15 until 19:30 h

that week is the first "long" weekend in May, i think it is in the middle of the school holidays. but, what do the school holidays matter? none of us are kiddies, it's not really a family holiday hot spot and it is early-ish in the season to still be quiet. (i hope)

ETA, speed testing, alp hooning and beer drinking when the 'ring is closed.

Great to see that people are still thinking about this... what's the state of play? I don't want to have it too late in the spring - or too long a trip - because I'm plotting a Le Mans trip too!

Right, now that i've done a bit more digging, it would appear that the provisional times for the 'ring tend to be what is expected in the offical times. So, that leaves us in a bit of a pickle irked

So, my suggestion is this. We stick to the dates suggested already, due partly to the fact i'd rather take 1 full week off work than 2 half weeks to get us there at a weekend, and also it gives us a bit of time to play with. So we adapt the itinerary instead biggrin. Basically, it's a europe trip with a day at the 'ring thrown in, rather than a 'ring trip with some touring of europe. I don't think any longer than 5/6 days is necessary, and it means those who just want to go to the ring can pop over for a couple of days for when the rest of us will be there, any we can all enjoy a blast round europe.

How does this sound? Appeal to anybody?

This isn't a PH organised trip, more a bunch of like minded people meeting up for a blast.

So, a show of hands would be a good idea for those still interested, along with some suggestions for where abouts to go (i'm sure some of you will have ideas or knowledge of the best driving roads in europe, along with sites to see) So, throw your hat into the ring, where would everybody like to go?

Cheers

Mark

tis cool with me, i don't suppose going to the south of france near cannes would be out of the question? i haven't been there for about 10 years and that area holds a lot of childhood memories.

or, we could do all those swiss and italian passes (as featured in Top Gear) just in our barges?

my suggestion for a route (based on what i want) meet up france/belgium etc. head down through Germany via the 'ring. head on south via the alps in to Swizerlan, through into northern italy and then west to Monte Carlo and then onto cannes. head north through the alps back up to the return ferries a week later?

and what about an unofficial trip name like BargeBall 2008?

Let's not mention 'ball' anything! I'd be up for doing a tour of the passes though, maybe Route Napoleon too? That ends up at Grasse which is just north of Cannes...
