I am possibly looking to move jobs in the New Year, the company I work for has changed a lot over the last couple of years, and not as much fun any more. In particular the way they look after their staff.

We were told recently that sickness policy would be changing to "three strikes" and your out, or at least wont be paid for any more that year... So for example, if you don't go in due to illness on a Monday, feel better on Tuesday, go back in, realise you are still ill, and take another day off in the same week (as I did this week) that's two strikes...

In addition, when I lost my mother about 18 months ago, I took the following day ( a friday) off, and got a call on Monday afternoon telling me that I should have been back in the office on the Monday, but they would "let me have it anyway".... what is the general bereavement policy, my sister was told to "take as long as she needs" as I was when I lost my father (granted it was 1984) and I realease the world has changed a lot since then..

I was told to take as long as I need in my last job when my Grandad died so for them to do this for your Mother is disgracfull.

In our company it has changed a lot too, no more time and a half on bank holidays, no sick pay at all and everyone keeps using this "Needs of the business" crap whenever someone wants a day off that does not correspond with when the manager wants the day off to be.

I think a lot of places have got like this though in the last few years so we are not alone.

The three strike rule will probably be their way of managing habitual sickness but if you really were stuck off for being ill 3 times in one year then I would bet that you will be getting a healthy pay-out from the tribunal.
