Has anyone fitted a head unit that has a 7" screen into their Chimaera dash.

I am thinking of the Alpine, Kenwood etc units that are Nav / DVD systems.

Like this:

Thanks,

I had the Pioneer in my Rangie and thought it the dog's. Superb even across Europe. The Kenwood I have in my S3 has troble if the car is in first or forth gear as there's not really room for the screen to slide out. Don't think the Kenwood is as good as the Pioneer but is does have a USB port which saves keeping your iPod in the car. Also the Kenwood's screen is quite dark and not that intuitive to navigate around. The sat nav is as you'd expect.

I have the Pioneer ipod interface in the boot with an old ipod plugged into it, stays in the car permanently. Works fine with head unit but the later versions of the AVIC have far better control over the ipod functions than mine has.

IMO as a satnav the Pioneer unit takes some beating and far better than any of the OE fits I have used. It has taken my Chim to all over France, Switzerland, Italy, Belgium, Holland, Germany, Austria, Luxembourg and obviously the UK with no problems at all.

Best car toy I have ever bought and worth every penny smile

I see the spacer - I was afraid that something like that might be needed.

I am trying to find a neat solution for an in-car pc for my Chimaera.

I found a headunit that might work, Liliput GL-701, which has a 7" Touchscreen and is designed to be used as a PC screen.

Having exchanged some email with the chinese manufacturer they think that space would be a problem, and also are suggesting that their unit might not be suitable anyway .

At least I think that's what they are saying ..

"Simon, as seeing in the Pic, I found the space for the monitor is limited, need a indash one to intalled, but for the sake of ur friendly kindness, would advice u think carefully, to tell the truth, the indash monitor work a bit instable for the hardware limitation on this field"

Anyone know of any other single DIN units that can act as a PC monitor, and have an "output" to allow the use of the Touchscreen?

The touchscreen comes out of the head unit, hence my questions.

It won't be playing music that much, I'm with you my exhaust is my soundtrack.

I have much more interesting things in mind.

Hi sgrimshaw, Have you got any furthur tracking a unit that you can use to fit in the space we have in the chim? been thinking about doing something like this my self.
Anyone else out there put a similar dvd nav system in the chim but have avoided the need for spacer on the dash. although the abouve pic using the alloy spacer looks cool but maybe a bit beyond my ability smile

Cheers Rich

I have the Pioneer unit, however the problem is that the screen hits the roll top on the top left corner, which prevents the screen going back far enough for good visibility, ie there is too much reflection, the only solution I can see is as the one above using a spacer to raise the roll top slightly.
There is a kit available for teh Pioneer to move the whole unit forward slightly, the only problem with this solution would be that the radio would be too close to the gear lever.

The other thing to consider is that when the screen is moving between the in and out position it only just misses the gear lever, it just slides over the top.

I used to have the Kenwood but I didnt fit it to the Chimaera for fear of it not clearing the gear knob when opening...I didnt think about the dash curve either though..!!

I normally place my android phone upright between the dash curve and bottom then use the built in sat nav. Would rather have it in a head unit though

I currently have a Kenwood 522DVD unit. With the movable screen ability I have found it does not impair changing gear or the screen angle.

This is closed.

In the process of opening. It easily clears the gear knob.

Open

This is 3rd gear selected. There is enough room, at least for me, to be able to change gear easily.

Clears the dash nicely and as said, doesn't affect the screen angle so its still easy to view.

My next upgrade is the garmin unit that it can connect to so I can use the sat nav on the screen. Just need to save some pennies.

I like that and option of a sensible Sat Nav such as Garmin is a selling point. I would be concerned about someone damaging the car to steal it though.

I am still looking.

I did send an inquiry to the sellers of this:

http://www.carcomputer.co.uk/shop/in-dash-monitors...

but I got no answer.

This joined with this:

http://www.carcomputer.co.uk/shop/car-computer-sys...

would be perfect IF the monitor would clear the dash.
