4 days with a cayman R start now (live!), ideas anyone?
Discussion
after supplying OPC Kendal (parker & parker) with my fully restored 911SC for the launch event of the new 991 series 911, as mentioned on another thread the ever helpful simon parker offered me the loan of a new cayman R for the duration (& when i say new i think it was just over 750 miles on the clock when i picked it up) & very kindly had the tank brimmed to the top.
now, seeing as i live up in carlisle (around 50 miles away) my car will be away until wednesday the 14th so i've got a bit of time to get to know the car
car is black with silver proto stripes & rear wing, lightweight 19" alloys in silver, lightweight buckets, sports chrono, sat nav & thats about it i think.
fist impressions? what a car!
for all my air-cooled passions, i'm still a guy who very much appreciates the modern stuff, as i've said a few times the boxster spyder is probably the best suited car for me that porsche make today & a lovely looking thing. what with my love of track days & ring trips can the caymen be even better?
bringing it home over the A6 the car instantly gives confidence, the road is a mixture of tight & twisty with some epic 4th gear sweepers to really get you in the mood. over shap summit there was plenty of snow around so we weren't fully on it (2.5 degrees & wet & greasy tarmac) but the wider footprint of the caymen over the 911 certainly gives it that planted feel.
it's plenty powerful enough (especially after getting out of a 204bhp 911!) & feels pretty light on its feet for a modern car. coming from the none assited steering of the 911 (that i still haven't fully gelled with yet) you tend to turn in more than you need! i'm not sure if the sport button alters the power steering as well as the throttle response but it'll just take a bit of getting used to. the engine note is just sublime! no switchable sports exhaust on this one but unbeleivably i don't think it needs it, yes i know they tune these things these days (as opposed to the equally sublime but plainly more mechanical sounding air-cooled engines) but they don't half make a good job of it.
the lightweight buckets are superb but the misses doesn't like them, also on pulling up at work a mate who was arriving had a sit in the car. now chris is a good 6 foot odd & built like a rugby player but he just couldn't fit in them & his head was brushing the ceiling. he said it felt like sitting in a go kart, it just wouldn't do for him at all (he drives an audi s5 cabby). interesting considering all the internet waffle that says any caymen R/spyder/gt3 that doesn't have the buckets isn't a real porsche!
other negatives? the wing mirrors seem comically huge! they obviously give great rearward vision (surely their point after all) but they create a massive blind spot at front quarter, the steering wheel seems to be way too thick (reminds me of my old CSL) but most annoying is the secondary ride quality with those 19" wheels. even on smooth roads the car seems to pitter patter over every tiny imperfection (& on local roads i wasn't even aware that there were any?!), probably exagerated by the hard cusions of the bucket seats.
but let's not dwell on the minor imperfections (& to be fair every modern car has sprouted masseive wing mirrors & wheels these days so it's a little unfair to single out the cayman for these), i've got a brand new porsche i could never (realisticly) afford & 3 full days & the norths best driving roads. so suggestions please! if you had this oppertunity what would you do?! some of you may even be considering this car so please if you need to know anything...
any questions you'd like answering, post them up...
anything yo'd like me to try, just ask...
any photo's you'd like to see...
just remember it is someone elses car so nothing that's going to damage it but anything else, go for it
(pics will follow when its light outside)

When my Cayman went in to get the wheels refurbished under warranty they gave me a C2s with about 2k miles on the clock and said that they probably couldn't get me car back to me for 7 days, what a bummer , so , a week's holiday was booked and me and her in doors headed off to the Scottish highlands touring , can't recommend it enough.
I treated the car as though it were my own though. I knew someone was going to be parting with a large wad of cash for this car eventually.

Nice! I had a look around the car a few times in Kendal. Am I imaging things but I thought the car had the Doppelkraput-plung-thingy (PDK) gear shift. If so, how are you finding it?
Was a nice day in South Lakes today. My 30 minute trip ended up being a 4hr blast with a nice lunch in Grange-over-Sands). :-)

Your car went in for wheel refurbishment and you got a new 911 for a week?! Wow!! Which OPC - might start using them for wheels. I treated the car as though it were my own though. I knew someone was going to be parting with a large wad of cash for this car eventually.

Yes, yes you did just type that on PH. any photo's you'd like to see...
anyway, before we set off on the PH run favourite of the moffat-selkirk-peebles triangle:
oh & just in case you're wondering, a quick scan of the PH ads turned up this beauty:
http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/3480851.htm
peridot green, black alloys, bucket seats & £39,995!!!
now thats some depreciation on a car that isn't even a year old yet!

For info I was offered 6k off list on a jan build. That was the opening offer Before any haggling from myself.
I had a cayman R for 2 days/450 miles a few weeks ago. Tbh it blew me away. I've driven a standard cayman s before but someone this seemed so much more of an event.. May be down to the snot green paint on the one I drove.
If I didn't have a CSL in the garage which I couldn't bring myself to part with at the moment there would be an R in its place.

Tempted? Yes! Though even with the best man maths I'd have to sell the 911SC (not the easiest job until spring I'd have thought) & probably revert to a finance deal, which I just can't justify in the "current climate".Let's see how things pan out after today's adventures.....
