Sorry for the long post.

Well today was the day my GT2 disappeared into the distance.
After a lot deliberation & sleepless nights i finally decided the latter part of the Summer that it was time to move it on.
Other than the impracticality/no bench/belts in the rear i just never used it to its potential and it all seemed a bit of a waste if i'm honest.

Now for anybody who is wishing to scratch the GT2 itch i would suggest spending a long time driving one before taking the plunge, i like many other "ex owners" was seduced by the immense power and the aggressive looks, boy do they look cool!, it was literally a quick blast and a heart led purchase rather than a mix of heart/head. It was also IMO the ultimate piece of Stuttgart at its very best, before electronics took over.
I never once though that it would be effected by different road surfaces, did i warm the tyres up enough?, are there any speed-bumps down this road, tram lining due to the wide stance and enormous rubber on each corner, catching the rubber lip on everything and the fear it may want to kill me one of these days by lulling me into a false sense of security.

So do i regret owning the Widow Maker?

No not at all, great piece of kit and i was fortunate enough to have bought privately and got a fantastic low owner example with a great history, that cost me a service and a lot of wax in my ownership.

So what the replacement going to be?
I needed to tick the boxes this time and use my head and heart coupled with releasing some cash for a rainy day.
So as i am an enthusiast and owned 10 911's now where do you go from a GT2?
back to an air-cooled maybe such as another 3.2c, this was an option with the G50 box? no couldn't cope with agricultural feel to be honest and the lethargic performance by todays standards, and i reckon it would just become another garage queen car like the rest, so 993 maybe, easily used reasonable performance a compromise between classic and modern maybe........no not for me much as they are a great 911, i've never been seduced by them to be honest even when i owned one.
Don't flame me but even considered a Datson GTR!

Anyway one evening TV was poor as usual got myself a beer & went surfing the net for all things Pork, had a look on the 911 Virgin site and spotted a 6T.
As i've owned one before they say never go back but this car stood out, very low miles with a good history and just had 7K spent on it to include 2 new K16 Turbos, new rads new condensers, new brake pipes and a host of other parts done by nine excellence which i found very reassuring knowing them and their reputation with 6T's. Rang them and they confirmed the 911V car was a great car and mechanically now it was the top of its game.

So i have dealt with Tom at 911V and the deal was done suffice to say, great chap to deal with and i would recommend 911 Virgin to anybody wanting a down to earth honest service from a reputable specialist.
So i'm back in a 996 Turbo which with all the work goes like the bloody clappers drives lovely and i feel safer in it, but more importantly i will be able to use more often and enjoy. Isn't that what ownership is really all about?
i even collected me 2 lads from school in it today now thats a first!

Probably a boring sensible post for me but i'm made up with the Turbo, i will post a few pics later. beer

Nice one Crimpy.

Good luck with 996T. It seems to have been a nice, pain-free move, well apart from the actual decision, which is always the hardest part.

As we all know, times change and sometimes our cars need to too. At least you've had one eh and a 996T is no bad thing to bomb around in.

The car sounds like a great example. I'd expect nothing else from "The garage of Crimp". smile

I look forward to the pics. thumbup

The 996T looks superb. It must have been a hard decision to arrive at getting rid of the GT2, but at least you've owned one and lived to tell the tale. wink

Probably the same developers as the newer houses on Amory's Holt. They do appear to be identical.

GT2 is a legend but an acquired taste.

That Turbo you've landed looks stunning/original and the body work looks very sharp much prefer the standard looking cars and although Artic Silver is a popular colour, i think it suits the Turbo & the GT2 for that matter. Looks mint also, you've obviously got another good car there albeit i've never seen you with a bad 911 to be honest. For your needs the Turbo is far better suited than the GT car is.
Whats the spec then spill the beans.

Glad you are happy with the car Ed. Thanks for your kind words and for a particularly special GT2. Here's hoping you get more use out of the Turbo as a family. It sounds like the right move at the right time. All the very best and thanks again for the business.

Cheers

Arctic Silver
C16 2002 Manual
58k miles
Hard back sports seats/Metropole
2 X new K16 Turbo's
2 x new Actuators
All new Rads
New AC Condensers
New Clutch thingy (accumulator)
New brake pipes
New tyres
New centre caps/refurb wheels
Recent discs all round.

Great car and goes very very well, must be the new blowers surprised at the pace to be honest, seems a lot quicker than the Black 02 car i owned??

Yeah made up with it, and as i have said historically nothing to touch them for the money.

Well done looks like you have a cracker there, you will no doubt be polishing it as we speak cloud9
Great car and the right colour in my honest opinion and no daft aerokits in sight and obviously it has a manual box to top it off, so the right spec.
I will never part with mine, there is nothing to touch them as a point to point daily missile & has been far more reliable and dare i say it more enjoyable than my 993 Turbo wink

Congrats bud, looks really sweet. GT2's are special, but unpractical if anything else than as a toy... Ken and his guys seriously knows their turbos, no one can make them go like Nine Excellence can. You might wanna check with Ken how his latest K16 hybrids are doing. Trust me, you will be surprised. They defy any logic!!

Hi Ed,

Glad you got sorted and Tom is always great to deal with. The car is standard, never been remapped, but no 996 Turbo leaves our place without running how it did out of the factory. You would be amazed at the number of turbos, whether 996 or 997 that are running below par without owners realising....I would say on average 3 in 4 will be running with some sort of small boost leak that is not detectable to the naked eye, along with other issues.

Enjoy the car smile

Ken

Not sure I'd agree with that. I used mine as a daily commute car, I know of another contributor on here who's happy to use his to commute to work too. They get a bad rap uneccesarily imo. Whilst they're no 5 Series, they're not difficult to drive.

Should have added the kids part... Agree they are no prob at all to drive and unfairly have gotten a bad rep. I love them, just wouldn't be practical with no rear seat. Thats why I bought a Turbo which turned GT2'ish, but much much much faster and rawer after a couple of Nine Excellence rounds of tweaks.
