I am currently driving a vauxhall astra sri 1.9 cdti 150. Nice car with decent performance and economy. Its just done over 50K. Its the "sporty SRI" version so insurance is on the high side and tyres are quite expensive. I just got a mortgage and have better things to spend money on these days than cars such as travelling etc. So its time to downsize. I am looking for a car with £35 tax or less and does 60pmg +. I quite like the Toyota Aygo. My sister has one and its good to drive, 2nd gear is impressive so such a small engine! I dont mind petrol or diesel. Cheers

So you're bascially saying your not a car enthusiast and have better things to spend your money on.

Why are you posting the question on here- and inflicting your choice of utterly boring appliances on us enthusiasts? rolleyes

Just get an Aygo then.

Aygo/C1/107 apparently has a nice sounding buzzy three cylinder in petrol form.

Is it worth the cost to change just to save £100 a year on tax and perhaps the same again on insurance, and assuming you do lots of miles per year would you want to do those in an Aygo?

If you're set on getting into the £35 tax band then I imagine the facelift BMW 118d would be the best bet from a driving enjoyment / performance angle. It has pretty much the same power as your Vectra (143bhp) and far more fun to drive than the Vauxhall. You could pick one of those up second hand (57 plate onwards) for perhaps £10k for higher mileage examples.

If money's a concern why not just get a pre 2001 Pug 106 1.5 d, peanuts to buy and run and who cares if it's £65 more a year to tax?

cheapest thing you can do is keep what you are driving and run it into the ground

I think you can be a car enthusiast and still have a car such as an Aygo. My budget is 5-6K. Any other suggestions?

As a matter of interest, what is so impressive about 2nd gear in the Aygo?

rofl Quite- What a pointless thing to do. And to think I was going to downgrade from v8 ubersaloon loveliness to a diesel Astra. Should have bought an Aygo!

I think that's up for debate, it would be like someone who claims to be a football fan but neither plays or watches.
