Hi my 996 gt3 recently got refused on a trackday for being too loud (105db)my fault for not checking the limit, but friend booked the trackday(goodwood).
I love the way it sounds, but am worried about the noise limits at trackdays,it has standard exhaust as far as i know, are they all that loud??

Hi, no that is not normal. Are you sure all of the exhaust is standard. Is it Mki or Mkii ?

Depends what revs theymeasure at. My mk2 struggled at 6000 on 105 days at Castle Combe and Goodwood after 20,000 miles. The cats take a bashing if you track the car. Never refused, but often on the limit and exhaust was hot and outwardly in fine health. Are you running a standard air intake?

It is a mk2 gt3,and is all standard as far as i am aware,it was tested at 6000 rpm and re tested later on in the day, limit at Goodwood is 98db.
There was a 996 cup race car there as well and he even changed his race exhaust back to standard(same as mine) and recorded 105db.
My car does sound fruitier than other gt3`s i have heard.I dont want to lose that great sound but also dont want the probs with noise limits, what can i do ???

Then you need new cats - and a good look over the exhaust!

What should i expect the noise level to drop to with new cats and the exhaust checked over and standard air intake?

Yep that's std for most GT3's, even ones that haven't done intergalactic miles.

Mine measures that at most trackdays. A little tip, when they're measuring it make sure the clutch is fully depressed, it will help to drop the db by about 1db.

Also rather than buying whole new cats u can apparently just get ur existing cats repacked.

isn't the test done at 2/3 max revs - not sure what max revs are in your car but if its 8400 then the test should be done at approx 5500rpm, which might be a few db quieter than 6k rpm.

Depends on day but 3/4 full revs at quite a few tracks so they settle on 6000.

You would never have made 98dB !!!
Make sure the engine is hot when tested +1-1.5 dB when cold, clutch in a good tip, these might get you down to 103-103.5 and cheat a bit on the 6K. 5.5K is def enough for the high viz bearded noise police.

Especially the testers at Oulton

Even when my cats had melted down to a couple of golf ball sized bits, I was still scraping through with 105dB readings. Putting OEM cats on gained me no more than 2dB (ie. 103dB) but within 6 months it was back up to 105dB.

Agree with Steve, testers at Oulton (and Snetts) are defo the worst to get past.

Castle Combe test is 100dB @ 4500RPM and I've never had a problem there.

But bear in mind that a 2 db drop is massive as volume doubles every 3 db ( or 6db depending on what you define as volume). The fact that it crept back up so quickly is worrying though.
