Sold a car lastnight was 110% honest with them, then got this text this morning .
sold the car for £900 , told them any minor issues (tyres need x2 new/ boot button/ fan only works on 4 ) There was a rattling noise that i got fixed 2 hours before i sold the car which cost me £50 to do was anti roll bar link- i didint have to do this as the guy was so keen to buy.
He showed up with his wife and child, and dad. they came for drive checked the car / engine and were very happy. then this morning i get a text below.
any opinions?
Hi, did you know you have sold us a faulty car? For a start you didn't say it was a CatD which means it's been involved in an accident, also the powersteering rack is a very high possibility is damaged which is a very expensive job. My mrs is extremely upset as she sold something she loved of high value to get this car.
This is what my mechanic said,
A rack is approx £200.00 plus labour, l am not sure on labour price, poss £160.00 this is a very rough price as I haven't seen the car and have guessed age and type!!. The pump might also be damaged if it has run dry, another load of money!! Where did you buy this from? If it was sold as in good condition you can take it back!!
By law you have to refund us!!!

You don't have to voluntarily declare if it's a Cat D, only if asked. All the rest about the steering and whatnot is just a load of tosh. It's their car now, they need to fund any repairs or maintenance they wish to carry out on their own vehicle.
Let them know you will have no further contact with them - and stick to that.

If you didn't no about any of the faults that they are now suggesting, don't worry about it & suggest to them that they should have bought along "their" mechanic to check it over before buying it.
If you did no it was cat D & also about the other faults then you should do the decent thing & give them their money back.

The absolute key thing for a private sale is Don't Lie, and be wary of subjective statements, e.g. you stating that "It's in fantastic condition" may not be the buyer's view. You don't need to tell them anything as long as they don't ask - but if you withhold requested information or detail, only then and only IF they can prove that, is the only time they might possibly have any comeback on you.Time for a sticky/wiki on this subject, I can't believe how many times a week this is asked!
Maybe they should have done a HPI check, or got their mechanic to check the car out BEFORE they bought it.

Awaits to see if the OP edits his first postI dont know if the OP knew it was Cat D or not. If he did he should have (morally)declared it. Other than that inspection, test drive e.t.c is to determine if its the right car for you.
If you decide it is and hand over cash its "sold as seen" and as the new owner maintenance and repair becomes your responsibility.
I have lost count of the cars i have bought which later turn up faults that where either on the brink of showing or well hidden. I take it on the chin and fix it, as i know i have no recourse.
