Certainly looks like it could be... Seeing how the 'standard' steel components have faired...

I thought the legend had it that only two stainless steel chassis' were made - Peter Wheeler's own SEAC and one of the racers?

yes

Chassis tube looks very good compaired to the rust. Did you get any pics of the outriggers, that'll be the acid test.

myths and legends...indeed.
Not sure if PW's car had a stainless chassis, rumour had it it was used on a customer car, and problems with that chassis resulted in no others being made.

Bug*er, I thought the problem was rust! What's the issues with the stainless chassis?

I believe that it was a swine to make.
The rear suspension mounts had to be beefed up, the Stainless had a tendancy to tear.

At the time TVR were pushing the envelope with the SEAC.
The Kevlar bodies were terrible in comparison to the GRP ones.
Blisters the size of tea saucers, weave showing through all over the place, and the SEAC wasn't a cheap motor.
The stainless chassis idea was another "envelope pusher", and it was easy to drop, as was the full kevlar bodies, sure the later ones had some kevlar in but not as much as the early ones.

Do you have any news on the outrigger material?

Couldn't get good pics of the outriggers due to the vegetation. This area looks clean though, and it's next to the wheels.

I thought there was about 6 SS chassis made, I was told they twisted badly when take out of the jig and the mild steel didnt have the same problems.
I know there was only a few full kevlar body SEAC's out there but mine has a lot of carbon fiber renforcement and you can see the kevlar placed on top of the fiber glass in its weave.
This car should be bought, totaly rebuilt and enjoyed.

That chassis looks in far to good a condition not to be stainless, especially given the ammount of time spent in a field and the lack of (seemingly) corrosion.
Take a magnet with you tomorrow and have a tap around!............it wont stick, but then you knew that! wink

Back to "myths and legends", yet again.
Six stainless chassis cars? "theseacpages" has it down as one or two?
Sorry to cut and paste "Chris Schirle confirmed......that of the Stainless chassis built for the racer 1 or 2 disappeared into road cars"
Loads of the myths seem to have originated from Blackpool.
Do agree with Campbell that this car needs rescuing even if it is only as far as a nice dry spot at the moment.
Why, oh why, is it in an field??

I agree, it looks almost certain to be stainless. Mega find and now needs bought and sorted.

This bit in the pic has me confused, it looks far too new.

It looks too small to be a power steering fluid pipe and too new to be an original fit brake pipe. Maybe it hasn't been sitting around for that many years
