Work Experiance

Hi All, Im new to the forum, posted this in the jobs section and realised it may not have the right people looking at it.

Im James, 18 years old and just finished BTEC National Diploma in Motorsport Engineering - Grade distinction. Before this I completed BTEC National Award in Motorsport Engineering with grade distinction.
Just posting up regarding work experience within the motorsport industry, im in a situation where im unsure what to do at the moment. I had applied and accepted to take a foundation degree in motorsport engineering, but due to lack of interest in the course they have just pulled the plug. This has left me with several options which I am still thinking about.

In the mean time I would like to gain as much experience as possible with teams at either trackdays or race events.

If there is anyone needing an extra hand with their racing please feel free to contact me as Im happy to take as much experience as I possibly can. I also have a full clean UK driving licence.

I don't know where you were planning to do your motor sports foundation degree but Swansea Uni and Loughborough both do them. Also, not wishing to sound pedantic, but when you are attempting to 'sell' yourself may I suggest you use a spell checker as the term 'experience' has 4 'e's, not three. Good luck with the search.

Thanks for that, not too far from me. I was at Snetterton at the weekend working on one of the 2cv's for the 24hr race.

Swansea Met used to have a very good reputation for it's various Motorsport courses, dating back to the 70's when it was known as 'The Tech' - from what I'm hearing lately (and I live locally) - things aren't quite what they used to be.

As an alternative to the foundation could you do A-Level Maths and/or Physics as an evening class whilst working at a team then apply to do an Engineering Degree? Might take you 2/3 years to get there but that's not necessary a bad thing if you have plenty of practical experience and will be able to cope with the maths. When I did my Auto Eng degree the guys that came the BTEC/C&G route really struggled with the maths whilst those of us who had done A-Level maths found most of the first year easy as it was just a repeat of what we had already studied. Is Brookes no longer doing their foundation course?

I do motorsport management and logistics course at myerscough college. Really good course. 2 years and you get a national diploma and then have the option of a 3rd year which puts it up to a honours degree

I had been looking into taking A-Level maths over this next year. There is a lot of options, and many thanks to those who have suggested some to me in this thread.

Hi James,

I've noticed a couple of people have mentioned Swansea Metropolitan University offer motorsport courses.
I am a student at Swansea Met, in my final year of the BEng Motorsport Engineering & Design course. I'm also the Chief Engineer of our Formula 4 team (www.smu.ac.uk/formula4)

The Uni is fantastic for motorsport, with a world beating Formula Student team as well as our highly active F4 team.
The Uni offer foundation degrees and HND courses as well as BSc and BEng degree courses. I started on the HND Motorsport Engineering, and highly recommend it.
