My Brand New Shiny Knob !
Discussion
This morning I received my new aluminium knob and it was a pleasure to fit on the car. Custom made from solid aluminium with a slight shoulder on the bottom polished to a mirror finish. 2" ball tapped 5/16 unc to a depth of 1.7/8 inch. It went straight on with a nut placed underneath to lock in place. None of that three screw allen key lark with rubber spacers to hold in place that never work. Only cost £22.50 and made by a small engineering workshop known as 'Properknob' and that is exactly what it is. If anyone wants any details, let me know. I am well pleased.

Driving gloves in winter then. Looks great!
Does it have the "gate" milled in the top or just smooth?
He wanted to do the gate on the top but I didn't want it. I like my knob smooth. It is infact mirror polished but doesn't look that shiny in the photo. Also it has a shoulder section underneath. I believe he can also do inscriptions and things but I prefer plain.Does it have the "gate" milled in the top or just smooth?
I drive this Wedge with leather driving gloves at all times anyway, because the steering wheel is wood and very shiny and thinner than leather steering wheels. The leather gloves gives a better grip and protects the wooden steering wheel, and now will protect me on winter days from holding a cold knob.

Today, amongst doing a few other things on the Wedge, I had to remove my new knob and then put it back again. The reason being, that the leather gear gaiter was not sitting correctly to cover the gear stick, and it needed cleaning. The beauty of a these custom made knobs to manufacturers specifications is that you can remove and replace them in seconds. Within seconds I whipped my knob off, cleaned and reset the shaft covering and replaced the the knob. Yet, every time the knob goes back on, it's as sound as the first installation. I took another picture to show the result.

I've tried to remove my shifter but it just doesn't want to budge, there's no sing of a grub screw so my bet is some numpty has used araldite to fit it
Grub screws are sometimes hidden under the lower section of the knob that unscrews. However, in some cases owners have been known to use a strong bonding compound to secure the knob onto the gearstick, after failing to secure it any other way. This of course is a problem in that even if you did manage to remove the knob, the state of the threads on the gearstick could be well shot.
