HELP!

I have a 2003 Mk2.5 Sport 1.8.

I recently serviced my MX5. The only thing I didn't do was replace my fuel filter. I'm quite confident i;m capable of this except for one big problem....

There is a plastic shield over the fuel filter, this is held on place by 5 Phillips screws. The 2 screws on the side nearest the centre of the car are impossible to get to. One is obstructed by the sub frame, the other I almost think I could get away without removing.

I can't believe you have to remove parts of the sub frame to change the fuel filter.

Has anybody done this? Any tips?

Yours being a newer car might be different but on mine the fuel filter cover panel is quite flexible so you may be able to remove just a few and bend it back?

I say this as on mine the damn thing whilst in previous ownership had not been refitted correctly and was flapping around underneath.

As abovethumbup
You can just undo the top ones and leave the two underneath, and then just curl it back on itself and under out of the way before you have some fun with the 2.5 fuel filter.

Many thanks folks.
Biggest concern is that I dont end up with a damaged shield and have an annoying noise disturb my playtime!
Will give it a shot.

Cheers

Update,

thanks for the tips and advice so far.

Had another go today, and failed again! Got the shield out of the way, got the filter out of its bracket and attempted the change.

My lines and filter are fitted with "Duck Bill" clips. For these you need a specific tool to remove them without having to replace them.

Thinking it might be a garage jobby!

Buying the tool will be cheaper than paying a garage wink

You don't need a tool, honest. As I posted i'n the other thread - it's really quite easy. Fiddly, at worst.

The clips come off fine with a small flat blade screwdriver, and go back on no problem.

No offense, intended but you appear to be making a big deal out of it! However I appreciate that if your less than confident about working on the fuel lines yourself then a garage is understandable.

Although the "special tool" they use i'n a garage will be the first flat blade screwdriver that comes to hand for the apprentice!

Later cars have a different connector. A flat-blade screwdriver won't work, at least not in a way that will let you reuse the connectors.

Yeah, no offence taken. It genuinely does require, at best 4 flat bladed screwdrivers to remove this one!

I have the car booked in with a local garage, i've told them exactly the situation and they will do the job for £15 to £20.

The specific tool cost £15, so for ease, it's a trip to the garage ad no hassle.

Hoping i'll notice an improvement in smooth power delivery otherwise got my eye on some HT's from MX5Parts.

Ta folks.

My money is on it making no difference whatsoever. It doesn't sound like a fuel starvation problem to me.

Attempt number 5!

Took the car to the garage. I left it there. I got a call saying "we cant do the filter today beause we can't remove the fuel line clips". Ha ha!

So they want me to source some replacement clips so they can damage the current ones.

Fair do's.

£4ish spent on MX5 parts and the car's back in next weekend for attempt 6.

Attempt number 6, DONE!!!

This is a delayed update but on Saturday before the Posrche Sunday service the MX5 went back to the garage, complete with clips and filter.

It took them half an hour and hey presto, filter replaced. The end of an epic tale!

Having received the clips I was going to do the job myself. However having burnt my foot badly, putting me on crutches and off walking or driving for a month furious it was up to the garage. £20 spent job done.
