british gay Fotballers!
Discussion
Saw this a few days ago on BBC3. Documentary about gay players in the English game, and why none have come out in 15 years etc etc.
Seems interesting. Why do people think it is we don't have any openly gay players?
Imo, there will need to be a good amount of top/respected players coming out. Its sad that people can't come out who are in sports in general.
Furthermore,if Messi, Van Persie, Modric, Xavi etc came out as gay, that'd be well more accepted as apposed to if Higginbottom came out as gay. (Random names, you get the point).

I watched that program too, then got me thinking..... why the hell would you want to tell everyone what you do in the bedroom? Do people do that in every other type of job?
And if you were gay and for some reason feel the need to tell everyone what you do with men in the bedroom, why would you do that to be subjected to a life of gay chants from the stands at matches.
Basically it is not going to do anyone any favours.
Then i thought again (i know twice in one day)..... its not just football, only one Rugby player has come out, I have never heard of a gay golfer, boxer, olympian, race driver etc either, probably because it has no relevance to their profession, so I don`t see why the Fashanu girl is so obsessed with people coming out, its not going to do her any harm but won`t do the sportsman any favours.

I seem to recall things not ending particularly well for the last gay professional footballer who "came out".
That was a shame, perhaps even more for the fact that his brother, who was such a knob about it, went on to be a much loved celebrity outside football. John Fashanu, the acceptable face of homophobic Britain. rb5er said:

I'm guessing you're straight and as such can't really relate to it. Coming out is in fact a very liberating experience and it can take a lot off stress of you (it did to me...although I'm only out to a select few). And if you were gay and for some reason feel the need to tell everyone what you do with men in the bedroom why would you do that to be subjected to a life of gay chants from the stands at matches.

Didn't he top himself in the end?

Although a quick google shows that it was after his football career was over, and it was after he was busted for allegedly bum raping a 17 year old boy
A quick google also shows that US police had already dropped the investigation due to a lack of evidence, but the public presumption of guilt (as highlighted by your post) contributed to his decision to commit suicide.GroundEffect said:
Because the majority of football fans are immature mouth-breathers?
This almost certainly is a big factor, even here on PH there are schoolboy sniggers around the rumors of various motorsport personalities being gay and the average PH-er is Mr Enlightened next to some of the neanderthals you see at football stadiums.sleep envy said:
Hi, my name is sleep envy and I'm a heterosexual
so f
king what?
straight people don't go around shouting out that they like the opposite sex so I don't see the need, nor am I remotely interested, knowing that gay people like the same sex
it's a case of 'look at me' syndrome
Again, voice of ignorance.so f

Until you're in the position of basically living a lie, you wont know.

You know they're gay, don't you? Coming out is basically the point of telling ANYONE in my book. It doesn't need to be parade.
and they didn't tell anyone, however, for one of them it became pretty obvious when he turned up to the pub and introduced his boyfriend to us seriously though, we just knew for years; none of us were either interested or bothered
