I had been looking for a exhaust solution for my 350i for some time and I had tried a straight thru system for some months. Bottom line it was just too loud (Motorway ringing in the ears!) and was getting some unwanted attention from our BIB! Some readily available systems are very good but also expensive and did not really give the sound I wanted from the RV8.

After some discussion with a bespoke exhaust company in Essex they came up with the box below. It is SS and costs £100 + VaT made and fitted which took them an hour to do! Just enough time for Full English at the cafe round the corner! Well pleased as it has a good loud and bass sound and small "footprint" so it does not catch but the most agressive speed bumps

Cheers

Chris

That looks neat, and a good price. Glad to see it's not only my car that has huge amounts of packing between the body and chassis!

You should have kept that one to yourself and become a supplier of bespoke Wedge pipes biggrin

Well I am sure that it will be useful as another option when looking at systems, still loud and IMHO sounds like a RV8 should!

Looks good - although the box itself does not look very new. Not sure if that is because it's mild steel ?

At least it will last a good while then .. main thing is to have it mounted as high as possible.

hmm...from 1st view i would say the box itself is not stainless, only the pipes are. but its your car, so you must know it.

That is what I thought ..

Stainless input pipe .. with an aluminised mild steel box .. a slightly odd combination but perhaps they just knocked it up as a custom job. The price was bloody good.

Try a magnet on the box - if it doesn't stick, its deffo stainless. (Or copper or zinc...)

Although many 'stainless' exhausts are made from ferritic stainless steel (1.4003 or similar) and that is magnetic...

No magnetic construction guys.....! This was a one off made by the guys in Basildon for me. I had asked for a good tone, free flowing box with a small foot print to miss those agressive road humps. Have to say that IMHO it sounds great, and touch wood does not seem to catch on the more agressive humps so happy!

Hi Jack,
What was the name of the company in Basildon. Mine is just to loud, I leave for work at about 06:30 and I cringe driving through the estate.
Regards,
BBT.

One of the new neighbours was muttering about the volume of the 390 whilst it was idling t'other day; I pointed out that the exhaust was as TVR intended it. His response (I didn't catch all of it for the noise hehe) included the words 'construction and use regs' which I shot down with the term 'small volume manufacturer' hehe

Seriously though, I think that although the exhaust is largely stainless, the wadding almost certainly wasn't, so I was contemplating plasma-cutting the top of the silencer off and repacking with some stainless steel wire wool... until I realised it's £30 a KILO... yikes

Still, a couple of kilos of that would be cheaper than having another silencer made.
