I had a similar problem with my passenger-side mirror.
The mirror assembly is a bit of a pig to work on, so I didn't bother to attempt a "proper" fix. Instead, I did a reasonably neat bodge which looks fine and works well.
You'll need to go to your local craft shop and buy a sheet of thin black neoprene rubber. Cut off some short strips, and use a screwdriver to push them down into the gap around the collar of the mirror until they take up enough of the slack to hold the mirror firmly in place. Trim off any bits that are sticking out using a stanley knife.
Mine's been like that for the two years I've owned the car. Maybe one day I'll fix it properly, but my "temporary" fix hasn't let me down.

Depends on whether its the mirror frame or the "tripod"
My frame has fatigued, so I will be replacing it come the spring. I've used the packing method outlined (or something similar), although this might be of use:

Thanks for the link. After reading I've decided it's definitely something to leave to people better qualified to repair it than me!My frame has fatigued, so I will be replacing it come the spring. I've used the packing method outlined (or something similar), although this might be of use:
