Steel has a lot going for it - and a few lengths of leading-edge tape will protect the paint from the worst of the winter road crap.

I love steel bikes.

Not ridden carbon so can't compare, but I'd take steel over aluminium every time. Alu is just so harsh.

Lovely looking bike.

Be aware, though, that £999 - 100 quid less - will get you into 11-speed Sram Force AND hydraulic discs from a popular online retailer.

Discs are the future, whatever the haters say. Specs a bit mmmmmm. FSA cranks are a bit cheap, but wouldn't cost much to put some Tiagra ones on there to suit the groupset. Steel has a lot going for it still.

Not sure what other prices are about, but this isn't to bad, and it's a great looking bike.

With 700/23 tyres, yes. Throw on some wider-rimmed wheels and 700/28 tyres and the different riding characteristics of frame materials are diminished.

My Quantec aluminium CX bike, with an alu fork, offers all-day comfort with 700/30 Vittoria Zaffiro training tyres on Oval Concept clinchers. The same bike with 700/23 rubber, well, it was say goodbye to your fillings time, even on smooth German roads.

My 1979 Merckx Corsa Extra, on 700/25 rubber, offers another experience. The springy ride *seems* to come from the frame, whereas the Quantec's more cushioned ride *seems* to come from the wider rubber.

I should mention the Quantec also sports a Brooks Swallow saddle, not the last word in style or light-weight, but a lovely thing.

Genesis bikes are so nice and great value. I was riding a day one Alfine this week off road and it was just so quiet and smooth a very comfortable ride. Swapping over to my Ridley and I'm instantly quicker however that speed also comes at the cost of comfort.

Planet X London Road is the bike I'm hankering after at the moment. I did think it would be a great bike for riding some of the unsuitable roads on the moors but having ridden my road bike at speed down what was only a potholed steep bank, I think I'd rather have wide bars to give me that extra confidence.

I'd sell my Kinesis Racelight for one as it ticks the boxes for me.

If my MTB sells tomorrow night I'll be ordering a stainless CdF on Monday. I'll get the frame set & build it up over the next few weeks. The only fly in the ointment is the stainless version has a bloody press bloody fit bottom bloody bracket...toss. The Enigma I'm looking at doesn't have a BPBFBBB but the sizing is not quite right for me so Genesis comes out on top & I'll get a bit of a discount on it too.

depends on your location, size of bike and condition.

I'm in Southampton. Bike is good, almost immaculate (very dirty currently!)

I got it about 13 months ago and its covered 1700 miles in that time. Mixture of on and off road.

Size is 56ish, a medium.
