Hi All

The time has come to get mine sorted before it lets me down.

Just wondered if there's anything I should know in the way of hints, tips, etc or is it really just as simple as it seems ie top panel under windscreen off, passenger side airbox and purple pipes off, wiring to solenoid off, undo 2 x caphead bolts & off she comes. Something tells me maybe not smile

Kind Regards
Simon

Not sure but I think you also need to remove the steel rail which holds the bonnet down - 2 bolts on the side I believe.

Hi Simon,

I understand that this is easier on a late car like yours...got all of my induction - alternator and aircon pump off at the mo....part of trying to find an oil leak...

Plus i have a drain on the battery ever since I connected a black wire to the negative terminal of the battery ...finding out after a big old spark that it was actually the feed to the 100amp fuse.

So thought it might have killed the battery or the alternator diode....had them checked yesterday they are fine....so the drain appears to be elsewhere...possibly the starter motor ...which I might as well check out whilst I have all of the induction off!

So looks like I will be going the same route this weekend..might be worth comparing notes mate?

On my 2001 4.5 there was the Heat Shield clipped on, two heavy duty cables retained by a single 13mm nut, 1 light guage wire which push fits into a Junction block and the 2 x 8mm Socket Heads (with split washers).

Basic but unbelievably fiddly to replace.

Good Luck thumbup

It is easier on some cars than others because they changed the panel that is below the windscreen. Some have a much deeper panel which includes a water run off feature. If yours has this expect it to be awkward but not impossible.

Here's a couple of pics to give you an idea how much stuff you'll need to take off to get in at it .....

Thanks all for your useful comments and pictures smile

Starter motor was off with less than an hours work.

Windscreen panel off
Passenger side airbox off (includind its rear bracket)
Purple pipes off cylinders 7 & 8
3 wires and heat shield off starter motor
2 M8 capheads removed (very tight needed half inch drive socket with allen key attachment as allen keys were just bending)
Starter motor removed through gap with room to spare.
Simplez.......Tch smile

Now just to get it refurbed and refitted. Been quoted around £100 by VRS in Coventry where TVR Power use.

Thanks again everyone.
Simon

Well done, good work and nice price on the refurb. Ask if they can upgrade any parts of the unit.....

Hi Jules

What parts is it possible to upgrade, I'm not really up to speed with starter motors, more used to 415V 3ph 35KW stuff smile

From memory it was clutch and solenoid plunger, you might have to do a bit of digging in the archives to get the exact info. I ended up just sourcing a Nissan Maxima unit and fitting that instead.

It's the 12V signal wire that pulls the solenoid in
