V8S Induction

After a lot of messing about with ideas for improving the induction on the V8S by fitting a high flow air filter in the engine bay with shorter plumbing (eg see photo 1) Ive decided that its not worth the effort. The downside of this idea was that there might be an increase in the induction air temperature. Therefore, I supposed, the gain from the high flow air filter would need to be significant to offset any increase in induction temp. Im happy to be corrected here but measurements show that there is little difference between ambient temperature and the temperature of the air entering the AFM on the standard set up which is surprising given that the drain pipe runs above the Y piece and part of the l/h exhaust manifold.

Here are four sets of measurements taken on different days in different conditions, where A = Ambient Temp; B = Induction temp on the road @ steady 3000rpm/**mph in 5th gear.

A readings 19 20 21 32
B readings 23 22 21 31

So Ive just gone for a cosmetic (common sense) job and replaced the flexible pipe from the alloy drain pipe to the AFM with a couple of silicone elbows and a straight bit. Looks tidier (IMO) and the neater route from the AFM means I can fit another gas strut to the off side for a bit of extra stability when the bonnet is up (also limits the opening and stops it hitting the ground and damaging the paintwork). Access to the filler cap on the header tank is still difficult even though Ive managed to move the tank an inch or so to the right. (Next winters project!).

I dont like the hose clips though; does anyone know if I can get some black ones from somewhere without having to spend an arm and a leg on aircraft quality adonsied items?

Thanks for the link. The hoses are 76mm ID. They might just look a bit bigger because of the camera angle.

Not black could you modify these?



Can't think of anything else with a "quick release" other than you can get worm drive (Jubilee) clips with a "wing nut" type of thing rather than need a screwdriver.

Thanks for the suggestion. That's the sort of thing I'm looking for but maybe less heavy duty. The pipes aren't pressurised so the clips just need to make them air tight.

but didn’t bother in the end because, whilst it might have reduced the air temperature in the “drain pipe” when the car was at a standstill or in traffic, it probably wouldn’t make any difference to the temperature at road speeds as this was already at or just above ambient (see 1st post). If anyone wants give it a go though, this is a cheap mod and the results would be worth posting for interest.

90º connected to 45º to a straight bit. All reasonably cheap stuff off Ebay as were the connectors.
