V8S Induction Mod

Part of the reason for moving the expansion tank next to the swirl pot was to free up the space for a better air filter arrangement so I could bin the ugly drain pipe. After experimenting with different air filters last year I’ve found the standard V8S item fits the space well and because it is so compressible there is no chance of it damaging the bonnet.

Received wisdom says having a shorter induction pipe from the filter to the AFM reduces low end torque but a quick run last night didn’t show anything different and it still pulled cleanly from 20mph in 5th,so maybe that won’t be an issue.
Because the air filter is now closer to the manifold I’m making a heat shield.

When finished, this will be double skinned with a 10mm air gap between the plates.

There’s no science here just making it up as I go along so if anyone wants to suggest a better heat shielding option please feel free. When I'm sure it's all working I'll strip off the drain pipe and assorted brackets.

Thanks Alan. There is a 2" gap between the front and rear inner wheel arches but I'm going to put a shield here to stop water and crud being thrown onto the end of the filter. There are still plenty of gaps though and I'm hoping there is a good flow of air over the top of the inner wheel arch to the filter.Joe
If you raised the filter would it not pickup air travelling over the front wheel arch line? As you have removed the anaconda hose, could you not run a shorter pipe from the air intake into the cavity in front of the wheel liner? That was my plan before I made a shorter induction pipe.
Not sure if the torque discussion is a valid one, but mine seems to pull much better in the mid range with the new pipe rather than having the filter directly on the AFM.

Hi Paul - I'm not sure running the pipe you suggest would help much and might even hinder the free flow of air over the top of the inner front wheel arch. I am concerned about losing the low to mid range torque though but I won't have an answer on that one until I give it a good run. Did you ever post up pictures of your new set-up?
All done, apart from some rubber trim to finish off the edges. Twin wall heat shield does seem to have some cooling effect for the air filter and I've made a neat little crap catcher to stop muck from the road getting through the gap between the front and rear inner arches.

Must've missed this post before Joe - like this modification a lot, especially in view of the classic star crazed/gel coat crack around the intake elbow, most seem to suffer from. I may well follow your lead with this, before I get the bonnet cracks done by a professional. Nice job Capt.
