..just had a fun blast in the GT3 on some quiet windy roads. Realised it's difficult to heel & toe in flip flops!!

For those of you going (or gone!) to the RMA weekend at Nurburgring, have fun!!

What a travesty, a car like that driven on the road according to some more "enlightened" contributors these cars are for use on track and on track only

though personally I don't subscribe to this train of thought

I had the opportunity to drive a very nice Mk1 recently over a mix of roads around Somerset and I was really impressed with its manners. This particular car was in road set up and it felt pretty civilised, but also beautifully taught and sharp. I didn't want to give it back.

I picked mine up from JZ today after having new discs, pads, oils, brake fluid, revised engine map, and
geo settings.

have hardly driven it at all in the last few months, but i quickly remembered how pointless
it is to try and have fun on our roads in such a car now days.

As you know, in the blink of an eye, you are doing stupid MPH, and then you need eyes up your
ass for speed scameras, or in my case today, people coming around a corner on your side of the road !!.

This made a 35 mile drive home a lot less exciting than i was hoping for.

Don't know why, but was just on such a downer about it, and actually thoght about handing in the towel
in when i got home :-(

Ah well, will have to look forward to Spa at the end of the month, and hope that makes it all worth
while again........

Hmmmmmm, go out and buy indecently quick road car, then spend a shed load to make it quicker (when you live in/around MK)
and wonder why it's not best suited the environment you live in

P.S. Did you see my Zanzibar Mk1 there ?

SlippyDiff,

You are fortunate to be based in North Wales where there's far less traffic and more opportunities to stretch the legs of your GT3 on a more regular basis. Many GT3s are based in the south east where there is relatively very little opportunity to extend the car without getting in trouble, just as Glenn has posted above.

For the record, it was you who suggested that there was an insinuation about GT3s only being suitable for track, when there wasn't. I clearly wrote in the post and other thread that I was irked by those who only wanted a GT3 for driving down King's Road. If you are not familiar with King's Road, I am sure many others based in London can enlighten you to it's average cruising speed of between 2mph and 10mph on any given day.

Enjoy your car as you wish, but I can guarantee you with 100% certainty that you have not experienced what your GT3 can do or is capable of until you take your GT3 onto the track, such are the capabilities of the car. Before you so freely dismiss others opinions which are formed by first hand experience - not hearsay or pub room imaginations, do yourself a favour and take your GT3 on track. I am sure you will be pleasantly surprised and will begin to understand what the rest of us are talking about as the GT3 is an awesome machine whose abilities can only be fully exploited on a closed circuit with little danger to public bystanders.

Cheers -

Yeah, I saw it there on Tuesday night (PCGB regional meet). How did you get that crack in the windscreen?

I drove back from the Ring on Tuesday in the RS, and decided to take the B roads to Aachen. Stunning weather, sun setting over the hills, and huge windturbines all over the place.

And no fear of getting points on your license.

Was the best road drive I've ever had in any car ever!! Was tempted to turn round and do it all again.

Looked abit like this....

I thought a Honda Civic loan car I had recently was too fast for the South East, what hope would I have in a GT3?

I agree it can be tricky to enjoy the car in the South East - my solution is to get up very early indeed and enjoy some roads from 5am to 9am with a few friends and then have a late breakfast.

There are some great routes around Goodwood for example which are hopeless once everyone else has got up, but first thing the in the morning they are magic .

Kind regards

Steve

With two kids under 5 I'm always up early, it's getting out the house that's the hard bit.

I'm only 15 mins from Goodwood so I'll have an explore one weekend. Breakfast club there tomorrow though.

no-one ever said that.

You clearly have a bee in your bonnet over this...

Polarexpress was saying that it was a shame that some people will only use it on the road. I use mine on the road, and I drive it fast where I can. Its fantastic on the road, but only on smooth ones. I did loads of porsche road driving before I ever did a track day.

5 years into porsche ownership I thought I was a great driver, being able to control a rwd car and learning to balance the throttle and
provoke the rear end etc.etc

Then I did a track day. At this point I realised what I was missing, and I also realised I was crap.

I have driven all over europe, much of england, wales and scotland in 911s. Some roads are terrific, but nothing compares to track driving.
Its so much faster, so much more thrilling and so much more challenging.

10 years later I now have a gt3 and for me that is the place to enjoy it the most and really drive it properly.

Last month a few of us went to spa.
A track that suits gt3's perfectly. Not only was the car totally awesome there, but the day was great fun, because everyone there is so enthusiastic about cars. There is no racing and if you go with a good club, the other drivers are very courteous.

Of course, you are entitled to your own opinion, but until you have done a trackday you cant really appreciate what we are saying.

Just do one. I promise I wont say I told you so.

So when I read/hear about owners who don't use these cars on circuit, or just use it on shopping trips down King's Road with little/no intention of "using it as intended", is it just me who thinks it is an utter travesty and waste of such a brilliant work of engineering?

Sorry, unless I'm mistaken PE, it's you who's suggesting that any GT3 owners who don't use their cars on the circuit (ie they use it on the road) OR those that do use theirs only on the Kings Rd are "not using them as intended"

Perhaps your original thread should have been more accurately titled "City poseurs driving their new 997 GT3s up the Kings Rd, is this acceptable behaviour to us trackday junkies ? " Rather than using a very wide brush which swept some non- trackday junkies up, you may well have avoided the responses you (in your words) didn't expect !

My "dig" was actually at Peterpeter, and was strictly tongue in cheek. Hence the use of

However, even though you chose to get personal (pubroom imaginations/hearsay etc tut tut ), I won't, I'll instead refer to the response Nervous made in the previous thread on this matter.
Something along the lines of : - if someone has purchased one of these fine motorcars, who has the right to determine how that person uses his or her car ? (and if that useage doesn't find favour with the "accuser" then "judges" that to be a travesty or a waste)

I personally find it hard to believe that so many people are happy to take £40 - £75K road cars on track and use tyres, brakes and fuel etc at alarming rates (especially when there are Cup cars out there for sale that are built for the job) I appreciate they may have to be trailered to and from the venue, but that seems a car far better suited to the rigours of trackday use than a roadgoing 996GT3RS.
BUT..........that is only my opinion, and I don't post on here saying it's a travesty DanH (and lots of others too) uses his/their RS on track (and thrashes it to within an inch of it's life no doubt
As previously stated, it's all about personal choice, seemingly something you don't feel should exist.

PeterP, far from having "a bee in my bonnet" I object very strongly to being told how or where to use my car, seemingly Nervous feels the same way.
I found your comment about "bullying" your friends into doing a trackday somewhat amusing, maybe "gently coerced" would have been a more fitting phrase to have used (and painted you in a better light ! ?

PE, Yes I am fortuitous to live in area with fantastic roads and scenery, but even if I lived "down South" I wouldn't be found driving round and round in circles at Brands or any other race cicuit.

As I previously stated, driving round in circles doesn't light my candle. (and is both expensive and surely carries with it a risk which is expensive to mitigate against)

Having tried just two trackdays (or were they pubroom imaginations ? ), (one in a 964RS and one in an E30 M3 with personal tuition) I came away thinking they were expensive (and for me) unfullfilling. Each to their own.

As you rightly state PP, if you wish to explore the performance envelope of any high performance car, a race circuit is the correct place to do so.
I do not profess to be a skilled wheelman, and I have no intention of exploring the limits of my car on the public roads.

I do however enjoy a "spirited" drive along largely empty roads, amidst stunning scenery, and judging by the crowd I met up with from the Rennlist Forum a couple of weeks ago, I'm not the only one.

PE You appear to be painting me as the guilty party in the debate over what constitutes the "correct" use of these superb cars.............there is no right or wrong use, the only "correct" use is the one the owner (who has paid for the privilege of owning one of these superbly engineered cars) chooses.

Far be it for you or me to declare that posing up and down the Kings Road is right or wrong because it doesn't meet your/my approval.

Tis now late, and I've just spent 3 hours driving my freshly (JZ Mactech) fettled GT3 from "down South" to oop North (ish)
It now drives as its manufacturer intended, to say I'm well chuffed with it is an understatement.

In fact it's so damn good, I may try a trackday in it.................................. only kidding

P.S. Seemingly an enjoyable drive can be found on the road ( judging by certain other contributors to this thread )

Thanks for the key scratch Glenn !! Whaddayameanitneedsloweringmore ? It was catching on every speed bump on the way to the Kings Road as it was..................

The crack in windscreen came courtesy of 965 Turbo being driven around N Wales "as god intended"

SlippyDiff,
With all due respect, I think you have misunderstood what I said.
Good luck with your motor, enjoy it for what you can get out of it, and enjoy the roads you have!
