Scrappage sadness

I'm about to scrap my 205 GTI. The car took me and a mate to Le Mans in 2007 which was it's last real journey. It's scruffy but solid and the engine is knackered. I drove it round the block this morning probably for the last time.

Some kind soul offered me an engine on here a couple of weeks ago but the fact is I have neither the facility or ability to transplant an engine. I've tried and failed to find a small garage to look at it with a view to repairing it but sadly they appear to be no more.

It isn't worth what I will get for it against a new C1 so my choice has been made for me.

It'll be a sad day when the roads are full of Priuses and the like but I guess you can't halt progress.

Don't scrap it! There's not many clean 205s left, and that looks like a good one. There's got to be someone that'll give it a good home.

There's plenty of people that will take it off your hands on 205gtidrivers. I know, I gave mine away last year and was inundated. I think it's a hillclimb car now, should probably try and find it

But I guess you're saying you'll get 2k scrappage trade-in on a new car?

It was a good one. I bought it in the mid 90s, sold it to a mate then bought it back. I don't want to scrap it but haven't the talent to put it back on the road. Believe me if I could I would.

A friend of mine sold a 205 rally car for near 5 figures when he split it and sold bits separately.

I am sure you will find someone who is willing to swap it for another car that will qualify for the scrappage scheme; seems such a waste even though the engine is knackered, a true cult classic!

American technique, meant to be relatively easy to repair the block.

Wont work,

Scrappage requires you to have owned the car for atleast 12 months.

stops people buying a 500 quid stter and getting 2k for it.

I didn't miss the point at all. A car like that is still too good to be scrapped.

I think I'd rather spend a grand getting it fixed properly, than getting 2 grand for it and having to add another, what, 4 grand and get a wee tin box with a demented bumblebee under the bonnet.

A dealer next door to us is just about to scrap an absolutely stunnig 205 Rallye with 1 old lady owner and 30k miles!! Such a shame to see this car go, but it's not worth the £2k that she'll get on the scrappage scheme.

Seriously, we "bodge" repaired a 1.6 litre 405 a couple of months ago for a customer who had no money with a block sealing pellet that goes straight in the cooling system - you could see the crack and where it filled with the sealer - We just charged the cust for the pellet (about 8 quid i think)- its been utterly fine since - might be worth a go to get a few more months of summer fun out of it - No mechanical knowledge required - just plop it in and heat the bugger up

I couldn't scrap something like that, I would seriously rather give it away for free to someone to restore than scrap it. Its a cult classic, please don't do it
